Is there a free, advanced painting program?

GIMP?

Or illegally, photoshop?

You want The GIMP. You do not want to do illegal things. Illegal things are bad. Bad, bad MP.

:shiftyr: Yeah, but GIMP only runs really well on Linux ;)

I'll take a look at gimp, and see if it's what I want.

gimp's UI is real confusing though.

Well, GIMp isn't exactly photoshop, but in terms of power and price (free) it more than makes the cut. It has most of the same basic effects that Photoshop has, and its open source (you can edit it without getting into copyright trouble) so if you know a good amount about scripting you can write your own filters. I only use it when I need cool brush effects or alpha channel editing because my version of photoshop cannot handle such things.

Good Luck. :)

Worked fine on Windows for me up through 2.2.8. I didn't use 2.2.9, but 2.2.10 frequently hangs on startup. Anyway, 2.4 should be coming out...before too long.

Well for me and my really slow computer, Gimp 2.2.8 was great, 2.2.9 is incredably slow on startup and I haven't yet tried 2.2.10. and yeah, Gimp is awesome, the few times I tried Photoshop (free trial) it was even slower then Gimp. But GImp is awesome, yes.
