I'll have more to say on this later, because on one of my last trips on a Greyhound I met the woman who is considered the expert on this case and she was headed to Chicago to deliver a speech about the men who appropriated her research as their own.

in any case, the discussion part at the bottom (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AlxvcLGeh5V_vhMpkRTTpwqWwvIE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3MXN 1bHE0BHNlYwN0bWE-/SIG=1c83h9vf4/**http%3a//post.news.messages.yahoo.com/bbs%3f.mm=NEWS%26action=l%26ft=1%26board=37138445% 26sid=37138445%26title=FBI%2520Closes%2520Probe%25 20of%25201955%2520Emmett%2520Till%2520Death%250A%2 6tid=aptillinvestigation%26date=11-23-2005%26url=story.news.yahoo.com%252Fnews%253Ftmpl% 253Dstory%2526u%253D%252Fap%252F20051123%252Fap_on _re_us%252Ftill_investigation_1%26.sig=xeOtKPhhkGF OWaewIU0IDQ--) is making me sick with all the racism and what they are saying about Emmitt Till. As much as I know about the case (the woman kept me up all night to tell me everything about the case, and I wrote a newspaper article about her fight to get recognition for her work) I am appalled... It's sick that people feel the way they do about the subject (click the discussion link to see)
I'll post more about the actual case in a bit once I find the DVD she gave me

The wikipedia page here on Emmitt Till has most of the information correct on the case, if you want to learn more

I know Emmit Till isn't old news--It's the fact that these ppl who were responsible for this crime were not convicted because law enforcement looked the other way!!! >.<

I don't understand?

Why are people surprised that the suspects were never brought to justice? Does "racism" not mean anything?

I mean, not to sound harsh or anything, but this happened in probably one of the most racist parts of the south.

On top of that, the 2 men who did this are dead -- What exactly do people hope to accomplish by bringing this up?

...Everyone over the age of 10 knows about racism. I don't get the point of this thread, we all know racism exists.

Exactly, I know why they got away with murder, because of racism. And apparently if you read the article, the ppl believe that there were more than these two guys who are dead that were responsible as well--And nobody did anything about it.

Oh well, it's done.

...Everyone over the age of 10 knows about racism. I don't get the point of this thread, we all know racism exists.

I think the point of the thread was that even after 50 years and even confessions by 2 men PROUD of what they did, no one was brought to justice. Seeing the pictures of what they did to Emmitt as well as what I know from the woman who I spoke to, it's very sad and still more incredible that it's making news even though, as skippy said, it's OLD NEWS.

I may be naive but there is no reason to be so hateful now as evidenced by the messages received on the yahoo! message board (which I provided a link for)

I wish everyone would have had to talk to the woman I spoke to on the bus because it opened my eyes to how violent racism is.

BUT THE TWO MEN WHO CONFESSED ARE DEAD.

So what exactly is supposed to happen?

it's surprising that history is not going to condemn these men.

condemn them how?

never mention them again? this thread certainly isnt helping that.

what do you want done? their graves to be blasted to bits? im not quite sure what you want here. how does history 'condemn' someone? and why should it, anyway? its a prime example of how bad racism got.

idk... i can;t tell you what to do... it's just sad that those men could do something so heinous and get away with it in the legal system :(

They weren't and aren't the only ones.

I understand that you amy want justice for this, but there are so many other crimes that have gone unsolved, or people who've gone unpunished...

I don't know :/

All you can do is hope that such a thing can't happen today.
