Haha, I got my braces off a few months ago, quite the relief. Now I just have to wear a retainer at night. You get used to them after a few months, doesn't even feel like they're there.

That sucks, I got my braces off a few months ago and my orthodontist gave me a permanent retainer, so I don't have to wear one. Tomorrow I'm going in to get a back-up one though in case the wire pops out. The braces hurt maybe..3 days per month, and you'll get used to it eventually. My teeth were so crooked that I found it totally worth it. I got lucky though, they thought originally that I would have to wear mine for 3 or more years, but my teeth moved so fast that they took them off after 18 months.

I got braces eight months ago, and coincidentally, got them tightened today. The first month is a killer because they'll bug the hell out of you. After 3 or so months, you'll get used to them and wont even notice them.
I woudl recommend using a lot of wax in the beginning until you get used to them. Stay off the hard foods until you adjust (maybe a week or so).

OHH and with the wax, wait until you absolutely can't stand the raw cheeks any more, then pu it on, that way the sores will heal thicker and you won't need the wax anymore. If you use the wax right away, you'll always need it because your cheeks will still be delicate.

Not only did I have braces for 3 years, about half of that included a set of grotesque headgear. I still wear a retainer at night, which is slowly accumulating layers of caked saliva. Tasty.
I have perfect teeth now, though. :D

Yeah, I got braces last month. They hurt horribly for the first week, and I got big whiteish sores on the side of my mouth. The first day I got them on, a bracket popped out, then two days later another bracket popped out, a week after that I had about three pop out, though now I am currently "broken-bracket" free, yay.
I found any kind of eating hurt, so I dont suggest it. Yes, just stay away from eating for a week and you'll generally experiance less pain in your mouth :P

Make sure you brush enough and correctly though when you do get braces. You don't want your teeth to develop ugly scars.

I remember I got mine on December 17th 2000. It was the day before my grade 7 pot luck lunch and I was so excited about this lunch. HOWEVER, because of the stupid pains of braces I didn't get to eat anything because it hurt so much. It took about a month for my gums to stop going crazy too.
I got them off 10 months later ^_^. I only got my top teeth done too, so I looked funny but I did still get to floss the bottom ones which made me happy. I recommend some nice hot water and lemon. It's good for you and the heat will keep your mind away from the pain. Lemon is also a sanitizer so it will help with any cuts you've gotten in your mouth.
stay strong, it will only get better and think about the benefits of brushing your teeth straight across ^_^

For anyone who wants to know. At 11:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, today, I am going to the orthodontist to have my braces put on. So yeah. That's for any of you who actually find this interesting.
Lol. I'v got braces and on the day I gotem I happened to have been burritos for dinner:rolleyes: Anyways you'll be sore for about the first 3-5 days. But here's something I've done that seems to make the pain go away faster: Whenever you take your "pain releiver" (aka Motrin/Tylenol/Whatever) take it at night. You see it has more effect because your mouth is relaxed while you're sleeping so you teeth will move more quickly. Thus the pain doesn't last as long.

LIES! On your back teeth, yes. Tell me that spacers hurt more than braces when you have springs in between your teeth and rubber bands running everywhere.
You will be fine though P_H. Drink milkshakes, they numb the pain, and while your mouth is still cold you can take bites of food. I hope it all went alright!

Hmm, each person must be different. So far, my braces haven't been a problem and I had crowded teeth like no other. I was only on soft foods for a week and that's because I had 4 bicuspids extracted. Even after I get my braces tightened, I can eat normal food the same day / week without problems.

Braces scare me. My brother had braces for such a long time and I need to get them soon, but according to the Orthodontist I won't need them on the bottom. It really sucks though because I had a retainer for a year that made me slur my speech and hurt my face soooo much.
In summary: Braces suck. BUT you look pretty darn good once you get them off, so I guess they're worth it.

Ah but you said you had crowded teeth. I've heard they don't hurt as much as out grown teeth. But then again I had outgrown teeth (In fact one was so bad that it showed even when I closed my mouth) and it still didn't hurt all that much. They're really not a problem. And they're certainly worth the result.

Yeah, it went okay I guess. Although, my teeth hurt bad. And with my overbite, the top front braces push into the inside of my lip and stuff. When I brush my teeth, my front teeth hurt like hell. any advice for brushing without hurting? Also, my mouth seems to be salivating alot, but whenever I try to swallow, the braces cut the sides of my tounge.

Take Ibuprofen. I've found that it works better than the other medicines for me. That'll knock out the pain.
For the brushing, until you get used to it, relax a little bit. Brush very lightly, even if you don't remove the plaque from your teeth. Do it more often. A week of bad brushing wont ruin your teeth. ;)
I'm not sure how the braces are cutting the sides of your tongue, but try some wax. Not an excessive amount, but just a tiny bit until you get used to it.
The more you think about your braces, the more they'll bother you. Try to keep yourself busy.

I HAD braces. They were extremely painful at first. I remember I couldn't eat anything hard for like 2 weeks. But your teeth get used to it, and after the first two weeks, you won't even feel it. Now I have retainers, and they're much more easier to get used to.
Quit your bitching. I went through three years of braces.
Five. But lets not get into an argument about who went through what, thats just dodgy.
Anyway, They didnt hurt all that much, just felt really tight and wierd. Uncomfortable yes, but not needing painkillers.
Again, your mouth is propably (okay, will be) different from mine so if you need 'em take 'em. (this logic is not to be applied to "needing" things like a new TV)
And stick it out, its worth it in the end, its so much easier to clean them when its done. Also you end up looking a damn sight better and you dont talk like a wally because your mouth is quadraspazzed.
Win win situation.
And with my overbite, the top front braces push into the inside of my lip and stuff.
yea they will a little bit. I had overbite too so I should know.
Speaking of overbite. Are you gonna need bands or headgear?

Question: I've seen movies where people have the whole face full of metal thing, but do people actually where them? I've never honestly seen one, so it's not like I'm trying to be funny or anything, I just don't know.

I'm not sure about this, but I think back in the day they used to wear it all day. Now, they only have to wear it 10 hours a day and it's usually at night while sleeping.

Those are the old kind, and the special kind. These days, its much easier. My mother would tell tales of where EACH tooth has a metal outlet to be slipped on, and those were strung together with a wire. It hurt so badly that she couldn't eat anything solid for two weeks and subsisted on soup/ice cream/ rice gruel. A fate both appetizing and disappointing.

I need braces, one of my teeth is twisted 45 degrees. I don't know If I'll ever get them though. Is 50+(or less) years of a nice couple teeth worth 1-4 years of pain and even more of retainers?

Let's weigh the options again... 1-4 years... or 50 FUCKING YEARS! I've never had braces (I was lucky enough not to need them) but I can imagine that having a 45* crooked tooth would hurt like hell. Yes, I would get braces if I were you, but I'm not you so it's your choice.

It really depends on the person. My teeth were really crowded, and my braces don't bother me at all. I don't complain about them, and it's not like it was 1-4 years of continuous pain.
I would say go for the braces. It's always nice to have a straight smile.

Agreed. Self-concious me that I am, I agree that I have two good physical qualities about myself.
1. I have crazy/beautiful looking blue eyes
2. I have nice looking white teeth
I also have some kickass red hair that I'm proud of.

hmmm... well I'm not that self-concious. Also the placement of the tooth in my mouth is such that it really doesn't look that bad.
Also, if I ever get a family, my wife will have to love me enough to say "I don't care about that one crooked tooth". If she doesn't, I can plan in a divorce in the next couple years.

Beeleive me you'll need one of the two. If it's not that bad then you'll probably get bands. Good thing too as you wonn't have little brothers calling you "magnet head" I was lucky enough to avoid that.(To his disatisfaction)

Interesting that we instantly believe as a society that each individual is entitled to a perfect mouth... well, at least the ones with dental plans. And what defines perfect? I mean, the first person to decide to glue huge chunks of metal to their face to rearrange the bone must have been severely deranged. I guess I just feel this way because I am not looking forward to getting my braces in a few months.

I guess I just feel this way because I am not looking forward to getting my braces in a few months.Who said perfect? By wrong, I ment all that was wrong that would be fixed by the braces. Cause see, I have like 2-3 cavities, and my teeth ain't exactly pearly white, niether are they perfectly shaped. So my mouth is far from perfect, and I don't expect to ever have a perfect mouth. I am truely sorry you are getting braces, I feel your pain, so do others here.
Oh, and about the wax, I have never used any. After the first 3-5 days of my cheeks and inside of my lips hurting, they just stopped. Now I am only bothered by the occasional chafing and irritation, although several of my teeth still hurt whenever anything touches them, which makes brushing and flossing that much harder not that it is easy now. Brushing itself is not to bad, but every time I floss, in at least 2 places between my teeth my gums bleed. And just getting the floss between my teeth is hard.
What are some foods you guys eat? mostly I eat apple sauce, yogurt, soup, semi-liquid or very soft foods like those, because as mentioned above, it hurts to chew alot. So any help in the foods department would be greatly appreciated.
