Apparently I have the news that Vista will...
1ne. you cant 'back up' game cds

2wo. cant run it unless you have directx10

and 3hree. Dx10 aint backwards comp, so you will have to buy a completely new graphics card.

The 3rd point happened before with another machine line, and it died

That is completely bullshit. Whoever posted that probably hates Microsoft or Vista and wishes for people not to buy Vista.

you can always back up those CDs, not like the publishers like that.
dx10 will sure be awesome -- or vaporware. games will make it dx9/OpenGL until most of the main gamer audience uses Vista. i believe that is not happening anytime soon.

Incidentally, Vista will also kill your first born and rape your pets.

1) You can back up whatever the hell you want to back up - some hacker will find a way.
2) Of course you can run it, but without the fancy eye candy called Aeroglass
3) False. Most DX9 hardware level cards will be able to run DX10.

The only problem I have with Vista is that it requires HDCP (High Definition Content Protection), which means to watch high def content, you'll have to buy a new vid card (no consumer level vid cards currently support HDCP) and a new monitor (only HDTVs support HDCP right now).

I believe Microsoft actually wants to make money.

Vista is a waste. I see no reason to upgrade to it.

Not now, and not in the future. I don't my os to have super candy-effects thanks.

Ah, but is your Windows 2000 machine still actively supported by Microsoft?
You can also turn off all the eye-candy, if you like (just like in XP).

Hey, Ive heard that from every computer 'nerd' that ive known.
It is a fact, Directx10 cards WILL NOT play DX9 games or lower...

Well, if you are right shorty, I think this will be the final demise of Microsoft once and for all, so I actually hope you are right.
Imagine how many companies would sue them for attempting to yet again corner the market, attempting to lock out software and hardware companies products from the PC industry is some thing they have been legally slapped for many times in the past.

It is a fact, Directx10 cards WILL NOT play DX9 games or lower...They probably don't know what they're talking about. Every version of DirectX is backwards compatible; it's ridiculous to say that DX10 cards won't play a DX9 game. Will a DX9 card play a DX8 game? You bet your ass it will. Now stop being stupid Shortyland.

And yet you provide no supporting links or facts to prove your point. You expect us to believe you?

I run XP now, =P

DX 10 doesn't support backwards compatibility with DX9, 8, 7, etc... sort of. From what I have read it will, but through different means or some such. And I guess that it will be possible to have DX10 on a machine different then one running Vista through emulation, so I guess we aren't all S.O.L.

But personally I find no reason to want Vista, there are some neat things with it (glancing through Dx10 articles apparently you could restart the video card without rebooting the computer, install drivers without rebooting, etc... which would be really awesome -- but hardly the feature that would want me to buy it.) but overall it just seems like a bunch of eye candy.

Yep, for all the things Microsoft has done not a single one warrents them continuing to exist in the world of computing.

But really, you cannot be serious. If MS died computing would be in a hole until some other company managed to take over and fill the void. I don't agree with MS's business practices or think they're the best thing to happen to computing, but if you want forward progress MS just literally disappearing is not the key.

And Shorty, please give some kind of documentation other than what "computer nerds" you know are saying. Because the computer nerds I know say that Windows Vista will be capable of launching your computer into a low-earth orbit at the press of a button, and I surely believe nerds.

Lets hope that everybody switches to OpenGL, so that Windows and Linux users can dance in unity!, or so ive heard. Dont forget about OpenGL
