View Full Version : interesting unit ideas...
i was playing on my custom map, which is 256X256, and i realised that we need better transport options. the dropship can only hold about 8 marines, and it's a flying bullseye. what i was figuring is a collection of ground-based peoplemovers, IE buses, trucks, command cars(incase you want to transport heroes to and from the battle, they're too uppity to ride a bus...), even flatbeds to transport units like goliaths and siege tanks. i noticed brood wars introduced the civilian, yet they can do nothing more than move around. i figured we could make use of them and use them to operate the new units and to build the roads they use. an SCV would build a new building, called a Driver Training Center, to produce civilians and to train them to operate the vehicles. the factory can be used to produce the vehicles. i was also figuring on 3 levels for the drivers, lvl 1 would be basic driver training, lvl 2 would allow minor off-roading and lvl 3 would make them able to do pretty much anything their vehicle could do, and perform emergency rescue of marines/medics in trouble. i also thought of making an ambulance, and a hospital for repairing non-mechanical units that are down to their last 5 health points. what's ya'll's opinion on it?
There were already Civilians in the original Starcraft, and in general the Civilian is a campaign unit that is not supposed to do much when it's not triggered...
As for your idea, what are you planning to do with it? Make a mod?
By the way, welcome to Warboards!

Thats an interesting concept. I have always wondered who ran the vehicles (like the vulture).
If u look really close theres a guy sitting there. Well, anyway.. That would be a cool mod to see, but i dont think its possible to completly make up new units. The concept of a mod is to extract files, modify them, then put them back just as you found them.
So in other words, theres no slots for adding new units.

Sure there are. There are tons of slots. There's all the heroes, and the unused heroes, and the independant units, and the unused blags... etc...

But you need memgraft and stargraft to do it. I, personly, have never goten into stargraft... it was to cunfusing. :P
And Stargraft and MemGraft are outdated too. Also it IS posible to create brand new units WITHOUT haveing to mod the heroes and independant units ect. But that requieres exe editing and there are only a few people who know how to do that, that are willing.(In other words don't ask) Any way it's a cool idea and would ceartainly put those civilians to work.

There was just one guy on Warboards ended out claiming that he made a brand new unit by adding an entry in the units.dat by using Arsenal Zero.

But then there's still the problem of creating the button to train the unit... Oh I just rememberd -- I think I read somewhere that you could add stuff using arr edit... I think I read that whereever I dl'd it.

The Sickel add-on (1.07)(that doesn't work for me) has underlords for zerg land transport, and you can even pick them up with overlords to have a lot of zerglings in an overlord! (Note that for some reason, zerglings take up 48 supply!) I don't know about the other races, but it has a ground transport in it. see http://tc.brutkrieg.de for more details.
