If you've taken martial arts please post your system. Even though different systems rank at different speeds it would still be cool to know your rank too... and any funny anecdotes.
System:Sogo-Goshin-Do
Rank:Gokyu Or Green Belt with one stripe
Anecdote:Our dojo Used to have mirrors covering two walls... we broke them all... by accident of course... not to mention about 15 varying sized holes in the drywall on the opposite two walls. :P

Anecdote: this is not funny...i have not studied taekwondo for a very long time but use it for defence in school(block never to attack).I often run on the walls of my classroom(3-4 long steps a second). :b

I don't do anything, but my friend does Capoeira, and he's pretty intensely into it. It's a pretty cool martial art, though slightly worthless if you ever tried to use it to defend yourself.

I took Tae-Kwon-Do for a short time. If fencing counts as a martial art, then I've done some fencing and a little bit of kendo when I was in Japan.

-_-...
Ok, it relies on the theory that an object can move in different directions at the same time, or be many places at once. For those of us Dunies out there, think Kwizats Haderack (if I spelled this wrong...I will be forced to fletch myself with Shinga wire).

Take Shotokan Karate. It's very popular, easy to find dojos, and it is FEARSOME. We have these devastating reverse punches that give other martial arts fits. It is a very physical style.

Karate and Tae Kwon Doe are the martial arts bicycle: everybody's had a ride. Half of it's just bastardized and generalized into garbage. They were both developed by races that are much larger than the Chinese (whom they were fighting) and are mostly brute force dumb shit. No grace, no chance against someone larger than you.
If you want to learn to punch someone out, I recommend Kung Fu (Wu Shu).
If you want to learn to choke someone without cause permanent harm (Judo).
If you want to learn to kill someone bare-handed (Ju-Jitsu).
The problem with the latter is that you can't do it recreationally. I've found myself using Judo to defend myself several times, and Ju Jitsu doesn't not permit that. Ju-jitsu always ends with someone in the hospital and someone in jail.
It IS possible to find unbastardized versions. Tae Kwon Do is pretty much entirely bastardized, so don't even bother. Besides, when you do to tournaments and see how they fight, it is stupid. The lightest touch, even if it has no power and is poorly placed is a point. Bitch slap on the arm? Point, you win. WTF? Also, don't take kickboxing. Pretty much the same thing.
Seriously, try to find Shotokan Karate. This is an amazing art, and it happens to be unbastardized. The lead Sensei, Sensei Naruyama, comes from Japan to the U.S. all the time and makes his rounds throughout the country, teaching any new stuff he has developed or testing Sensei's and junk. The man is incredible. I went to a seminar of his once. He's over seventy, and he faked once. Just a little foot stomp to get his opponent to react. He was standing on pads, and I could feel the vibrations through the pad and through the floor though I was sitting about 10 yards away. It was FREAKY.
Shotokan is a relatively new art. It only came to the U.S. around WWII, but it has rapidly been growing. It really emphazizes power, and it uses all the muscles in your body it possibly can for each move, maximizing speed and power. By all means, if you want to chuck someone around a bit, take Judo, but if you want to just punish someone, take Shotokan.

I take TaeKwon-Do too, and I have to admit that a lot of the differnt schools I've seen suck. Luckly, my school isn't among those. :) I'm a red belt, going for my black stripe as soon as I can break 4 boards with a spin-jumping sidekick. Right now, I can only break 2.
I am also an ornge belt in hapkido, with some knoladge in using joon-bong and sonja-bong (Bo staff and Nunchuck in japenese)
Critter, you ARE aware that the word "Bo" IS japanese, and in Japan when they refer to a Bo staff...they say Bo.

Cool Ender, I think I'll check it out. Got any websites or video links handy at all of the Style of fighting?
Here is a site of an organization run by Gichin Funakoshi's son. Gichin was the creator of Shotokan. His son and Sensei Nishiyama (who I mentioned earlier) run two different organizations of the same art. Both are fantastic. I was in Nishiyama's organization, but I went to a tournament where members of Funakoshi's organization competed.

Here is another site
http://www.jskakaratedo.com/
Basically, these are sites that will introduce you to the basic precepts of Shotokan. The fska sites is better. Search the web for any teachers in your area, whereever that is.
Suprisingly, Wikipedia also has EXCELLENT information on Shotokan, without the typical plugging you'll find on the other two sites. Ignore the neutrality thing at the top; this is excellent information.

In English, I think it's used as a clarification of type. However, it is redundant.

Not even remotely funny.
I got up to Orange in Kenpo. Them emphasize power, speed, and knowing where to hit your enemy. My sensei was 5'6" and about 130 and he could easily throw me. (I was about 5'10" and 150) Now my friends refuse to playfight me because I always win. ;(

Me too. I never got beyond basic exercises when I took a shot at it a few years back. Now, I suppose it wouldn't be too bad to give it another go, but I'm not sure whether I want to spend all that time and money on it, seeing as I want to focus on art as my hobby, and the violin as a second hobby. I don't think I would have enough time for three.

Actually, I've only heard it refered to as a "Bo Staff"....
Wait, critter, let me get this straight. Are you doing weapons training in Hapkido? Why?
No, I do weapons training outside of teakwon-do and hapkido. So you could say that I know three styles of martial arts.
