Simple situation. I have enough spare money in my bank to get either an iPod or a new phone, but not both (not got a new job yet.) Problem is i'm undecided in which one to get, cuz both my original phone and CD player (bless it) manage to serve their purpose.

Which do you think I should go for? Why?

Neither, save the money for other things. Do you really need an iPod or a new phone? You said they already both work well, so why waste money on the upgrade? Instead save the money for when you might need it, or until you get a job.

Or, if you really don't know what to do send the money to me :).

Yeah, if you don't need either, don't buy them.

If either I'd go with an MP3 player, albiet, not an iPod. Go with a different mp3 player one without the propietary iTunes and such.

If your new phone have the MP3 function then I suggest you to get the phone, worth more value.

If you have a decent phone that doesn't embaress you because of it's lameness, go with nothing. If the only spare money you have is enough for an ipod or phone, you should save it a bit.

Unless your phone and CD player are just really shitty, buy something else with the cash, or put it in savings.

Put it in a sock, sew the sock into the lining of a quilt, put the quilt in a cedar chest and bury the chest at least 4 feet under the surface of your newly planned garage. Then pour a cement foundation over the area. Your money will be safe.

id say get the phone, but it really depends on what phone youre getting, the bleeding edge ones now can hold enough songs to last about a days worth depending on how large ur onboard + expandable memory is. So the phone doubles as an ipod in a sense. Check out for any of the sony ericcson (how do u spell that) W series phones like the w800 and the w900, and samsung phones

I'd get the ipod, because do you really need to be in contact with everyone all the time? Nah. Phone calls are annoying. Music is great.

get an mp3 player that isn't an iPod... the iPod is the hip trendy thing to do... people say "I've got an iPod!!" and it's just lame cuz now everybody has one cuz it's the iN thing to do...

try Zen or something else... cheaper, more reliable and holds more songs :)

Get a phone with mp3 capabilities! Kill two birds with one stone.

I'd suggest if you really want an MP3 player to get the Dell Jukebox. Cheaper and from what I've heard, better than the iPod.

Personally, I'd stay away from the "RAZR" or the "SLVR." I know about 70% of the people around me who have the RAZR complain about it, and one person has a cover that constantly falls off and he has to put it back on. They're thin and flimsy, and easily breakable.

I'd say you put it into a high-yield CD account. Save it for the future.

If you must get one or the other, then get an MP3 player.

If you're daring however, might I suggest buying a cheap diamond ring and selling it to some guy who really needs an anniversary gift ASAP. Charge him double and watch your assets grow. Then get both.

Here's how I see it:

mp3 player = listening to people blather about lost girlfriends, and pimping hos
cell phone = listening to people blather about lost girlfriends, and pimping hos, and everything else, plus you get to talk back to them.

Getting a new phone is grand...unless it violates your current contract. Make sure you won't have to pay up the rest of your contract if you decide to change up your plan (which could be as simple as attaching the same number to a new phone...)

Neither. These wordly possessions are all obstacles in the realisation of moksha: freedom from the cycle of births and rebirths.

THe problem with mp3 phones is that you've got to have a subscription or pay more monthly, or have a limited storage space... Or whatever.

I would rahter have a decent sized mp3 player, that I can plug straight into my computer and transfer my plain ol' mp3s to without having to jump through hoops, convert them, or lose them for some reason or another =/

Same here. I have a buddy who has a RAZR and it seems to take some serious abuse.

its not half as bad. i have a phone that has 3gb of onboard memory and expandable by memory sticks from sony, so an additional 2gb bringing it to 5, which isnt bad, double a nano

i cant stop wondering how you endure the sux0r wireless plans there. around here the service and hardware are separate, so you could buy a phone from Shop A (which partners with Provider A) and buy the service from Provider B at Shop B.
and to the "iPod is proprietary" argument: most other mp3 players run Microsoft's comparable technology to Apple's AAC/FairPlay, making them just as proprietary. although there is just one official shop for iPod, the iTMS, its for some reason keeping around 80% of the whole market.
just save your money until either of your hardware breaks, then its the time to get better. unless you have a good music collection, then go with iPod right away ;)

Thanks all the advice thus far.

Now that most of you mention it, keeping hold of the money for a while wont prevent me from getting one or the other. Thing is I'm getting a bit bored a really need something new to play with...and eventually break:P

If I get another job soon and manage to save up a bit more, I could get a laptop or something. Thing is I reckon a new phone could still be pretty useful!

I say immediately piss away your money on whichever looks least promising; the phone is my bet, it'll depreciate the fastest. Otherwise, don't save your money--instead look around and determine which item can immediately squander as much cash as possible for your temporary gratification. It's not like you have a job or anything.
