View Full Version : How Fast Do You Drive?

One of my colleagues got a ticket this weekend while driving to Galveston for a housewarming party. She was pretty cheesed about it and wasn't at all pleased with the idea of having to pay $106 for "court costs" on top of her defensive driving class.

However, during the course of her tirade, the topic of the speed she was driving was brought up during a brief quorum by multiple members of the lab. She was doing 82 in a 70, and says she wasn't really going that fast. Several other females (whom aren't attractive at all, I don't want to hear it) claim that they also drive insanely fast (80+) on a regular basis.

My mother and sister also have this problem, where they seem to be competing for points-on-license (25 was most recent # to come to mind). For those of us driving, do you regularly speed? I do around 76 or so, but refuse to get any higher than that--and have had my brushes with Johnny Law. Yet these idiots claim to go faster than that all the time.

Anyway, enough of my yammering. Comments?

Before I joined I drove and I'd usually go about the speed limit, give or take 5 miles an hour either way, usually over

Yeah, in a 65 zone, i don't push more than 75-78. Usually i just follow the lemmings on the highway and go with the speed of the surrounding traffic. You just never know when you'll catch a cop in a bad mood...

EDIT: Regarding women drivers - My girlfriend also typically drives pretty damn fast though, and gives me shit for being 'slow'. Hmmm...

I exceed the limit by 5-6 mph on average. Florida law dictates that a ticket cannot be issued for anything under 6 mph in excess of the posted limit. My speedometer is approximately 2 mph fast. Therefore, by driving 6 mph over the posted limit, I can assure myself that I am always under the legally punishable limit.

I will occasionally exceed the limit on the interstate if I can wedge myself between a few other motorists whom are doing the same thing. Even better is getting behind a tractor-trailer when they're wide open as they have their ears on to Smokey's in the area.

I have received 2 speeding tickets in 18 years of driving. Once was a speed trap, no way out of that. The other was the evening that the Buccaneers won the NFC championship (and subsequently won the Superbowl,) I was doing about 90mph (In a 55,) then slowed due to a vehicle that had pulled across my lane, and a county officer busted me for 12mph over. I think I had some amazing luck on my side that night, I could have been in the county slammer had it not been for this asshole that pulled out in front of me.

"I can't drive 55... because my car only goes 38!"

Actually I try to stay about the speed limit, but it depends where I am... In city streets usually the limit but if on the freeway maybe 10 mph over, depending on the time of day and if there's cops out (usually none)

My gf is a speed demon tho... scares the hell out of me when she drives fast :|

I'm a new driver (hoping to get my license this week actually), and tend to aim for about 5 over. I have no idea what this means from a law standpoint (I thought they could pull you over if you were 1 mile over the speed limit if they wanted to?), but at that speed I don't feel like people are passing me and I don't feel like I'm the fastest on the road. That, and my parents tend to drive 5 over.

I have received 2 speeding tickets in 18 years of driving. That's pretty good, dude. (Especially since in my mind i can envision you burning down the highway on a Harley at light speed!) I've been pulled over plenty of times but it's always been for stupid stuff like expired tabs. Fortunately that's about the same as a trumped up parking ticket. Um... or 10. :D

EDIT: Super. Now I have Sammy Hagar in my head.

I've been driving for....five years now? I've gotten one speeding ticket, going 55 in a 35. I really consider myself a good driver, albeit an aggressive one. There are some folks who use that "defensive driving" technique they teach or whatever, but they are horrible drivers nonetheless, they aren't aware of shit going on around them. They think that if yield to all other cars and drive real slow they don't have to worry about anything, which is just plain wrong.

On a 65mph interstate, with good conditions and little traffic I usually go between 75-85mph.

I almost always remain within 5 MPH of the speed limit, unless I'm on a highway. In which case I generally remain within 5 MPH of the speed limit unless I'm in a major hurry or randomly feel like keeping up with traffic.

No tickets or violations of any sort, yet. Which is good, as I've lagged in converting my provisional into a real license.

I tend to hover about 5 MPH over the limit. So far I haven't been pulled over for anything yet. :)

While I also consider myself a good driver, I will also aquiesce that I am an aggressive one. I have toned it down a good bit since I was younger, simply because I've noticed how aggressive driving can really bite you in the ass in some scenarios.

In my case it's impatience that drives (no pun intended) my aggression. Mostly because of what hammock is pointing out, that some jackasses think that if they do 10 MPH under the speedlimit and brake at every sign of possible danger ("Is that mosquito swerving into my path?!"). Inevitably they drive the people behind them fucking crazy, clog the lane, and make fucking traffic a nightmare.

My favorite is when you're on a two-way 8-lane highway and someone gets into a wreck on the other side and traffic on YOUR side slows down because people want to fucking rubberneck. Seriously, Samir on Office Space...that's me.

i dont drive (and dont really have any plans to in the near future to start) but my mother drives anywhere from the speed limit to 90+. mostly depends on the speed of the rest of traffic.

I only have my G1, but when I do drive I drive around, or only slightly faster than the speed limit; however, that's on normal residential roads. I have yet to be on any highways (and can't with a G1).

Speaking of which I regret not getting my G1 when I turned 16, I could be getting near acquiring my G by now >.<.

On a city street, I usually shoot for on the speed limit or with 2-3 miles of it. Of course, in Jacksonville... not a lot of people follow the road laws. If something is in the road, we find a way around it, even if it involves driving into a ditch or something. I'm guilty of that myself.

On the interstate, I try to go about the same speed as traffic.

The second I leave my house I accelerate to 90mph.

I'm a good driver.
I alway try to drive what the speed limit are, in a 60 zone I try to drive between 59-61.
Some time might drive over the speed limit by 5, but hardly over that.

That's what everybody says until they've had that piece of plastic with the horrible picture of their face on it for more than two weeks.

That's why my speed varies. Usually I hover around 5 over on normal, city roads, simply because they are more stop-and-go and there are more cops.

As far as highways, I usually go no more than 15 over depending on conditions. If there's an actual flow to the traffic, I stick to that. If I'm alone on the road I'll go around 70-75 in a 65 zone. Most cops on highways don't care, as they're looking for the guy weaving in and out going 95. I've also never gotten a speeding ticket (I have for illegal left turn, what a joke.)

Give me about 6 months then I can drive!

I would go the speedlimit, or close too usually. Or around 90-110 on highways, nobody here goes the limit on highways, not even cops.

I've found that cops especially don't go the speed limit, but that doesn't mean they won't pull your ass over if you're speeding.

I do about +/- 5 of the speed limit depending on other drivers and the conditions. (I get my license in a month and a half.)

I go as fast as others around me are going. As long as theres a guy in front of me going 90, I can go 80.

As a leadfoot I tend to exceed the speed limit by at least 10 miles, but then again I tend to know the county and city police patrol routines so I basically know their patterns and hiding spots. And on the Interstate anything goes though every once in a while I'll keep an eye out for the state cops. ;)

On a side note, I had only gotten pulled over for speeding 2 times, but I tend to get pulled over for less serious (and more than likely bullshit) infractions, though I think they do it just so they can get a closer look at me.

Yeah, it always seems to be the chicks that have no real sense of speed limit or its purpose. Anyway, I thought I knew (of) all the egomaniacs in WB. I guess I can welcome you to the club!

Now, does this count for off roading too?

I usually hug the limit and then some. Never been in an accident, never been pulled over... maybe it's cause I know police procedures and their routes... hmmm... or maybe... nah.

Anyway, I feel sorry for any of you poor shmucks that get caught, it's kinda funny to hear kids swearing up a storm over a ticket that was easily avoidable...

Demon_Child, either
A. You're hot and you talk yourself out of tickets. Nothing wrong with that.
B. Threaten the officer as he comes up to your door. If plan A fails.
C. Or you're just that damn lucky to get that much attention from law enforcement personnel.

I don't know where I was going with that.

I still have a spot free record... so HA!
