Ok heres the deal folks, i have ancient dial-up still and i used to have a silent modem that worked though speakers which i could turn off to sneak on during the night, but i got a new computer and the slot isnt the same, so i got a new modem, but it makes a sound at a volume of a frieght train, which has not only woken up my mom, but has also woken up the rest of the neigborhood several times, is there anyone that can give me a step-by-step an how to silence my anicent modem technology??
Depends on the version of windows I suppose.
You'll have to go through and get to the modem's properties (ie: via device manager) and look for speaker control and slide it to Off. When you apply it should/might ask you to restart the computer -- go ahead and do that.
Hopefully this *SHOULD* work, but I remember it being screwy in the past. You might also have to work your way through the Dial Up connection's properties (if you have something other then AOL or another dial up service that uses thier own connection software).
Otherwise, you might search google =P

1) Find a sledge hammer.
2) Apply sledge hammer to modem.
3) Repeat step 2 until modem makes no noise.
Voila!

Whats the difference between cable ad ADSL?

Cable is dependent upon the same stuff they use for cable TV, and from what I've hear is slower with more people using it. ADSL is asynchronous-DSL that works off of the phone line without actually taking up the existing phone line. It is dependent upon (as far as I know) how far away you are from your phone service's substation. This is from what I have heard, and Should be taken as false if it can be proven so.

Try covering the modem with a shitload of pillows?
id rather use duct tape creatively.

id rather use duct tape creatively.
And how would i go about doing that??
it is very hard to replicate online, thats why i said "creatively".
note: this is not really serious.

I just realized your note: this is not rele serious thing.
Heh, Heh.... Simple. Take the modem out. Get your dads .22 go out in the back yard and have a little target practice... No not really. Hmm silenceing a niosy modem. Does the modem itself have a speaker attached to it? Or does it go through the computers speaker?
Windows has some wierd way of handling modem sounds... You have to change it like 5 different ways before it sticks, I suppose technically you could boot into safe mode and try changing the settings around =/

I understand that but i would have to know EXACTLY how to do EVERYTHING.
Well thats simple. To boot into safe mode you need to hold down the F8 key after the BIOS flashes up. then just select "Safe Mode" and hit enter. Then when it boots up go into "Internet Opitions" and click the tab "Conections" then select you default connection and click on "Settings". Where you see the username click on "Properties" and when the next box appears click on your default modem and click "Configure". A new box should appear and at the bottom there should be a little check bow that says "Enable Modem Speaker". Un-check this box and then click OK. Keep clicking OK until you get out of every box thats open and then you should be set. Simply reboot your computer and it should work.

i have already tryed this, you can not un-enable the modem speaker, you can only turn it down, and i did that, it is all the way down, however it is still as loud as a frieght train, thats the problem i am having.
Hmm... Well looks like your stuck. Whats the difference between the modems.(probably the slots ones bigger(ISA) and the one that your new computer uses is smaller (PCI))

Yes, very good, thats correct, i may beable to get a ISA to PCI adapter however last i checked those didnt exsist
No those don't exist and probably never will. The only thing I can think of now is to ask you again: Does the modem have a speaker attached to it?
