Even if you do find a free anti-virus software, I wouldn't trust it. There are lots of fake virus softwares out there that you can download and then install spyware or adware onto your computer. I would just renew the subscription and not risk anything, especially with this new virus that I heard going around that will wipe your drive completely, and any other computer connected to it on an intranet.

Or you could check the sticky'd topic here in this forum and find AVG one of the best AV software out there, including Mcafee and Norton.

Oh, look at that. I didn't see that topic. I might get some of the stuff it says, my software (NOD32) seems to have a bad auto-protect and only really gets stuff with a full-system scan.

McAfee's great, when I was infected by a worm it caught all of the files (all 1000) Norton said there were no infected files >.>. I downloaded the free (trial) version of McAfee VirusScan and AntiSpyware from Download.com.
AVG is an antivirus software from Grisoft.
It can be found here, http://free.grisoft.com/ On top of that, its free for private/home use.
It also updates itself every day (as in, there are always updates to install, whether virus defs or new detection methods or w/e -- this is also free). It can also scan email, offer real time protection, and catches damn near everything. ADD: The updates you recieve are the same ones that AVG "Pro" users recieve. So that tells you something right there.
In an article comparing AV programs, AVG actually outperformed McAfee and Norton quite a few times.
If you want to waste money on some piece of shit program that costs $50 and then charges you more to keep updated be my guest. But I have used AVG for years, and its caught anything and everything that I've thrown at it.
Just becuase something costs money does not mean it is automatically better then free alternatives.
Besides if your going to pay for anything, you ought to buy something like Kaspersky.
