Hi, i have been using limewire for a while now, and was wondering why the downloads always seem to slow right down when they have like 1 or 2 percent left. Is it supposed to do this, to save bandwidth or something, or is it just with mine? It's not really a problem , i was just wondering. Thx.
Chris.

Since you're downloading p2p, there may be several parts of your file that none of your peers have. It's like copying homework--if none of you have #20, you'll all have to wait for someone that has #20 before you can complete it. The download will keep downloading parts that is available, however those parts that are missing will have to wait. That is why some people have downloads stuck at 99% because all their 213 peers are missing that 1%, and the person who has that 1% is offline.

Limewire isnt exactly like bittorrent. Insn't it that you must have the whole file before you are able to share it?

Yeah, over Limewire (and most P2P software I believe) you share the WHOLE file not just part; however, I think you download like a bittorrent (i.e. different parts) so that it goes faster.

I don't think it's part of the problem -- it must be on your side. Exactly what the problem is I have no idea.

I would suggest using a BitTorrenting client, like Bitcomet (http://www.bitcomet.com) or some such other thing. I use bit comet. How bit torrenting works, if you didnt know, is generally the same as limewire; you take bits of files from many different computers at once. The main difference, like MarkPyro noted, is that using bit torrent you can upload the parts of the file that you are downloading while actually still downloading it, actually making the download faster (dont ask me, i dont know why either). The hardest part of bittorrenting is finding active torrents, for that i suggest a site like *edited* or *edited*
My personal favorite is torrent portal, because it has a user friendly interface, though some popups, and the torrents are arranged well. I hope you found this post hopeful

PS: It feels good to be back, Warboards.
EDIT: If your firewall doesnt allow for torrenting, pm me, and ill try to help you with that.

Limewire was one of the best. I haven't used it much recently, so I don't know if it's really degenerated as some claim. As for your problem, a likely explanation would be that of the hosts you are downloading from, the one giving you the last portion of the file is a slower connection. Note that the bandwidth listed next to a file is the fastest computer hosting that file. If there are 200 56k users and 1 T3 user, the file will be listed with a host bandwidth at T1 or higher. If that one fast connection is being used, you're stuck with the slow ones.
That example is extreme, but imagine that you are connected to 3 fast machines and 2 slow ones. One of the slow ones is giving you the end of the file, so once the others have finished your download appears to slow greatly because you are only downloading from 1 or 2 hosts.
Also, has anyone else seen Limewire's anti-piracy protection? On the download page, it asks if you might use Limewire for copyright infringement. If you say you might (not that you will), it will not let you download the installer because they do not support such behavior. Of course, they have no way to prevent you from clicking back, choosing no, and downloading the file. I wonder if they really think a facade like that gives them any sort of legal ground in the event of a lawsuit.

Out of sheer curiosity, I clicked yes. I didn't think it would do anything. But, I find it funny.
In my eyes, it's like:
"Here is a pipe for marijana."
"Thank you."
"But, before we hand it over, will you be smoking actual 'marijana' out of this."
/me thinks
"Nope."
"Sorry, please go back and select the appropriate answer."
First, if your going to be torrenting, I find uTorrent is the best. Better the Azerues, low memory usage, small, its really nice.
Second: We don't support piracy and stuff here on Warboards, so in the future, please don't link to Torrent Sites (unless they are public domain) or anything like that ok?
I will have to close this as well, if your having Firewall problems with P2P stuff, there are many many forums out there that can help I am sure.

You must have the entire file in order to share it. When you start a download in Limewire, you connect to as many people as you can, and the file is split into parts. So the download will be fast. However, the size of the parts into which it is split is finite, so when you are almost done with the file, and there is only one or two parts left, instead of being connected with ten or more users (and taking in a lot of data at one time) you are only conected to one or two, and so the download speed decreases.
