I think the choice is obvious.

Warcraft 3 is a good game, but its old.
If youre a casual gamer and dont really care about game types ( FPS ,RPG, etc), go for WoW.
If you like RTS, War3.
I would go for WoW and just download war3.
Both are great,
WoW - for excellency in gameplay
WC3 - for huge learning of Modding, programming and great map making!
Provided you asked on this forum and not the WoW one... my answer is obvious (WC3 with TFT). ;) Plus for the fact, that I don't like to play extra (other than the money spent just 'cause am online) just to play with other fellas like WoW does. :P

Warcraft. Totally. It lasts longer then WoW and it costs so much less. I mean, are you ready to spend like 12$/a month for a game? Warcraft is maybe not better, but you can play it more and it costs so much less.
I have never played WoW, so I voted Warcraft 3 by default since it is such a great game. And WoW is some can-only-be-played-online thing, with fees to play it even after you've paid the initial cost. What a joke. And its RPG.

World of Warcraft is great if you have a ton of friends that you want to play with and you like to spend jillions of hours playing. Then you won't notice that the game is based around time, and not skill. It's generally a matter of whom can spend the most time playing, farming, and running quests. There's also the issue of a monthly subscription fee on top of the initial cost.
WarcraftIII is great if you like to start every game from scratch and like a learning curve. No matter what level you're dealing with in an opponent, you both start with the same basic setup. However, the game is much more skill based, and thus requires a lot more knowledge and skills on the part of the players. You can't learn a few units and two strategies for your race and become a top player. You really need to learn and apply skillsets. It's not a big comp stomp over and over, you're dealing with other people that are sometimes very versed in the way Warcraft plays and has evolved.
Some of my friends played WCIII for a while and enjoyed it to some extent, but immediately dropped it and switched to WoW--because they already had friends that were going to play and they didn't like the "stress" that comes with WCIII. WoW is made so that anybody can play, and it's basically a time-based game for items. WCIII is made to differentiate players according to skill-level, and is geared towards competition and strategy.
Pretty much I'm the exact opposite of most of my friends. I don't like games that turn out to be World of Wasting-Time. I know people in college that have played those games 1000+ hours...I don't have that kind of time to waste to compete.

So is it like Runescape... except on Warcraft, with better graphics (not very difficult) and a few other things?

sure, i guess, but I managed to get to lvl 45, and that's saying something, as I dont' get much time to play.
Im DoomedNewbie on RuneScape, but i rarely get on, as I am playing FarCry more often.
I kinda like both, except I dont' have 10 hours a day to play. My parents keep tellin me do go do this, go do that.
World of WarCraft is okay for price, cause I can just do some more "chores", but I get even less free time, unless I dont' do something.
The majority of you voted for WarCraft III, which I'm starting to lean towards....
Unless someone else states something.
I'm not really into mapmakin, it's just a waste of time, unless you can actually play on it, but I really don't like playing on maps that I make, cause it usually turns out that i screwed up somehow....
The FarCry mapmaking software is also kinda hard (it didnt' come with a manual, and im still tryin to learn)

The Warcraft 3 mapping is difficult, well for me anyway. The Age of Empires 2 type was very easy, but Warcraft 3's manual teaches one nothing about it and its difficult anyway. For me at least. But I never use the map editor, you don't need to.
