Ok, its not computer help (what do you take me for?)

I am currently a few computers short (I know I know, self proclaimed nerd without multiple computers to mess with...) and was wondering if anyone would like to help out.

I want to create a massive guide (for lack of anything else to call it) with recommendations on various programs including protection, browsing, utilities, etc...

While I can provide info for Windows XP and Windows 2000 (I believe, its been awhile since my Win2k was up, but its not to different) what I need is people with;

Windows ME, Windows 98SE and Windows 95 who are willing to help out and test some programs with me.

I want to create different sections of this guide to go with people using 95 (omg get with the program dudez!), people using 98SE, people using ME (*shudder*) and people using Win2k and Windows XP.

For instance, I would need people to help test the following (For now, I intent to test a lot more) programs on various platforms and report thier results (Or if you use them already, let me know how it goes):

Winamp 5 // Winamp 2.9
Media Player Classic (Klite Codec Pack)
AVG
Avast!
Kerio Personal Firewall
Sygate Firewall (I used this for awhile... but didn't like it)
Firefox // Opera // Other browsers (ie: how does the latest opera version run on windows 98 and Me?)
Adaware
Spybot
Microsoft's Antispyware Beta (I believe this only works on Windows XP though, so the other versions are moot)
Openoffice suite
Torrent Programs, including: uTorrent, Azureus, Bittorrent (original?) client, Bit Tornado, etc... (Which one runs the fastest on older systems, which ones offer the best options, etc...)

"Skinning" Programs, including WindowBlinds (I suppose) and Neowin's uxtheme patcher for Windows XP. I am not sure, but if anyone know of some Opensource alternatives for skinning old windows (I remember there were a few... or am I tripping?) let me know.

I also want to have some sections on;

Battle.net bots (ie: Stealthbot, not sure what other ones work anymore... I knot Ultimate can work through that BG3 thingy)

IM Clients (how does Trillian run on older windows?, How does MSN? Yim? AIM? -- plugins for each, like ones that remove ads/add functionality/etc... open source alternatives like GAIM perhaps).

IRC Clients (though I am pretty sure that mIRC works similarly on Windows 95 as it does on Windows XP, its not that big of a resource hog O_o)

Also I want to include a section on possibly iffy stuff ie: DVD Backups and Drive Emulation/Image Creation/etc...

so:

Daemon Tools
Alcohol 120%
CloneCD // CloneDVD (? its been awhile since I have used this/either/whatever)

I think I will only want DVDShrink/Decryptor/that fox program (wtf is it called?) section to refer to WindowsXP and WIndows2000, since trying to make backups or even burn dvds and such on older systems is just nerveracking >_<! But if anyone of you holdouts have run these things on an older system using windows 98 or ME or something then let me know how they work out!

I am going to be making a list of other programs and stuff as I think of them (your welcome to add to it if you wish, ie: if you use a spyware program that I dont and you think its decent enough to be added to the list) also I want to have a section on computer utilities and stuff like CPU-Z (issat what its called?) Memtest86, etc... other things like that for troubleshooting stuff.

Even simple stuff like WinRAR, Winzip, etc... Stuff like that.

Programs that you get when you first load windows and then forget about -- you know what I am talking about.

Is anyone interested in helping me out? Even if you've already used // or are using some of these programs, let me know how they work out for you so we can cover all the bases -- ie: Is AVG to slow for you on Windows 95, but AVast! runs slightly faster? Does Azureus make your windows 98 machine slow down? Etc...

If you'd like to add a program to the list, just tell me its name, and a link to where I can download it so I can check it out for myself.

Also I want this to be an informative list -- not one that gives a person 10 different choices and tells them "oh well its really up to you..." I want it to give clear pros/cons perhaps: IE: AVG is in depth and scans deeper then Avast! but its slower and might use up more resources then Avast! does. AVG updates really easily, automatically, Avast! requires manual updating (these are for examples, I dont know if they are true =P) stuff like that you know?

Anyways. Now that I have rambled....

Post here if you can help, or have some comments about various programs that i've listed, or programs that your currently using that you think should be part of a big guide thingy.

(and we will have some subsections regarding Firefox Extensions and the like as well)

In general, I think you can eliminate Windows 95. It's over ten years old, no longer support by MS, and generally obsolete. I would guess that few to none are actually viewing Warboards with Windows 95. Windows 98 and ME are generally application compatible so I think they can be lumped together.

In the past week there were:

5,962 users on Windows XP.
507 users on Windows 2000.
311 users on Windows 98.
73 users on Windows ME.
40 users on Windows Server 2003.
4 users on Windows NT.
1 user on Windows 95.

AJ and BST hijacked my thread :(

TimP: It can't hurt to include a few things about Windows 95. I want this guide to be super easy to understand (perhaps with a bunch of screenshots and stuff). I was also thinking it would be awesome to be able to create a hard copy version of it with a CD to be able to pass out to the average person. (Haha, but that would be most tech support people out of a job XD)

But I am not that dead set on it, I am more interested in Windows 98SE and above.

I had Windows ME for 4 years and here is my comprehensive guide to all who use it:

Upgrade to XP now.

But seriously, ME is possibly the worst operating system Microsoft ever came up with. It's incredibly unstable and runs slowly and inefficiently.

Woo go Windows XP :P

Oh oops, hijacking <_<

Well Neo, if I wasn't on XP I would help you out but the only systems I have run on XP and my 2000 system is about to die so I am afraid I cannot be of any assitance :(
