View Full Version : Huge *.dll mess up

*Sigh* Gosh, I don't even know how to start this... well, lets try anyway.
A few weeks ago, I've tried out a cleaning tool (at AnalogX (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/dllarch.htm)) recommended by a fella n' that supposedly was to clense my laptop from all the unneeded *.dll's that might be hovering there, but in fact it clensed almost all my OS related ones.
I've already fixed the one that prevented me to access my "task manager.exe" (with the 'all knowing' Ctrl+Alt+Del method) by getting it from the Net since it warned me about that *.dll file missing.
Today, have realised that I can't format any drive and am trying to do a complete format overhaul at my USB Pen. I really need that done in order to use it's full capacity to pass a few files from one place to another without having to split'em in pieces. :concern:
Btw, I didn't want to reinstall my Windows 2K OS, 'cause for doing that I'd have to uninstall all my updates which is a (proverbial) sore pain in the @** (in particular having deleted it's uninstall informations with saving up HD space purposes in mind). :P
Anyone can help me out here? Any hint on how to solve this predicament of mine is extremely appreciated. :cookie: Thanks in advance. :)

Try putting in your Windows CD and selecting the "Repair Installation" option when it comes up (after you choose to install Windows, it will detect the installation and present the option). Although it should work, I've never tried it before, so back up your data if you can.

Yeah I was gonna say, you can repair individual files using your windows CD, there's gotta be a way to repair the whole kit and caboodle. WL's got the ticket.

Last time I've checked my 2K OS didn't accept the reparation feature due to having the Service Pack 4 installed later on. :P
But I'll try it again, none the less... :) maybe due to the mass deletion it just might accept it. :o
For it, I just need ot get home n' fetch the dreaded (n' dusty) CD.
Problem update: As I suspected, it didn't allowed me to update nor repair the OS. :P
I also have (found) a laptop drivers CD. I might as well try it too, although I seriously doubt that it'd have the formatting drivers. :o
I'll feedback on it later on, though. Any other handy solutions in the mid-time? ;)
I've never used the Windows repair feature, but if your original Windows 2000 disc is unable to repair your SP4 system (which wouldn't be surprising), slipstreaming the original disc may solve the problem. Instructions (http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_xp_sp_slipstreaming.htm)
I was never able to get a slipstream disc to work :/

I slipstreamed Windows 2000 a while ago and I've been able to boot off of it and install it. I've also slipstreamed Windows XP but haven't had to install off of it yet.
Yeah. I tried slip'in my Win2k, but it always buggered up. Though I just eventually gave up after I gave into Windows XP.

Just to let ya know that my laptop CD driver attempt was a vain one. And that am now dl'ing the SP4 for the 2K OS, just to try slipstreaming it (as soon as I finish reading n' comprehending the concepts behind it). But as far as I'm goin', it seems that will have to make me a variant of my OS setup CD. ;)
Question: After reading the 6 pages tut' on how to slipstream my 2K OS (and having decided to go for CD option), I still have my doubts on it's feasibility since the folders that should copy from my Windows directory folder might also have files missing in there. :concern:
Oh well, I'll try n' give it a shot with a CD-RW tonight none the less (and will keep ya posted on eventual results). :)

Fellas it was about time for an update... Alas, I couldn't do the splistream jazz since wasn't able to find a Portuguese Service Pack 4 to make my OS repair itself. :(
Guess that the time came when I'll have to start saving some doh to buy an Windows XP. :P Btw, which do ya fellas suggest as in more stable n' less heavy on the system (laptop with Pentium IV, 512 RAM with 40 GBs HD)? I know that there were two, the Home or Pro' edition (reminding also that ain't that fond of the extra media junk that is bundled with one of'em), which one do you sugest then?
Windows XP Pro has support for two physical processors (not the same as dual core, Win XP Home supports dual core), IIS 5.1 for web serving, FTP, etc., Remote Desktop support, Active Directory support, and some other stuff. If you don't know what this is or don't need it, then go with XP Home. Pro vs. Home has nothing to do with multimedia.
Well, a friend of mine just gave me a link to where find a version of the 2K Service Pack 4 in Portuguese. I'll just try it to see if it solves my issue, before jumping on the XP bandwagon... XD (but I'll keep in mind the switch, anyway.)

Thanks for the clean presentation on the ups n' downs of each version. Since I use FTP, might just as well go for the Pro' version. And unistall the WS_FTP Pro that had installed, or do you suggest me to keep it around? ;)
Well by FTP I mean an FTP server, not an FTP client (as far as I know WS_FTP is mainly a client). There are some free FTP servers available for Windows, though, so if that's the only reason you might as well save yourself $100.

Yeah, you're right but it's a fine app to handle your IE's dl's as if they were FTP. But also have used it to manage a portion of mine on a FTP server where the admin' gave me the permissions necessary to do almost everything over there. ;)
And as for FTP manager apps, there are a few out there for free as you prob'ly know too.
Oh, and about that media thingy... that was from his Office XP CD's, not the Windows (XP) ones. *Cues Yoda impersonation* Right again, you were. :)
