You can have extended computer players, 9-12 being reasonably stable. As for creating new player slots, I don't know if that's possibly via modding or not.

It wasn't possible last i checked. There might be something that may allow you do do it in the mapping world, because 8 player slot max is only due to there being 8 player slots in the map design. Last i looked i think i saw that there's 12 player colours, so if the correct amount of tinkering was applied then maybe you could have up to 12 players in a map?
As for modding, i haven't noticed any programs that deal with that sorta thing. But what do know anyway?:P
Adding more than 8 human players is impossible; the amount is heavily hardcoded into SC. Even with Hex editing you probably won't be able to do it, at least, in less than six months an/or without help.
You can add players 9-12 to your maps as computer players, using editors like StarForge and SCMDraft, but as Blizzard decided to not have 12 players, but only 8, in multiplayer, they never finished coding these players to be used in maps ('cept for player 12 which was made critter-friendly, and no more); Thus, they will not be affected by most triggers, and will cause weird effects at certain points, so I don't recommend you using them.
There are also players 13-256, but those were coded to be used for effects in game-reply files, so putting them in normal maps will be TeH WeIrD, don't do it.
Long story short, nah, ya can't have more than 8 playaz in da map mon. Sorry.
Buy Warcraft III and you get to have 12 human players plus an additional computer player and a passive player, plus the editor is almost unlimited in any other way. :p

I was checking the rez files, ones that you open with TblPad, I found the text "Illegal number of players." in one of the files, that could be a clue.

You cannot have more than 8 active players in the game -- that is, you cannot have more than 8 human and computer players combined. However, if you're making a map and you want "player-less" units to be on the map, you can assign the units to player 9 (or any big number) and they will appear to be inactive units when you run the map.

Just be advised that players above #8 might mess with one another... ;) for instance and if not mistaken, player 9 always attacked player 11 no matter what ya did otherwise.
And I woulnd't advise ya to use players above 11, since 12 is the neutral default (read, mainly critters) n' the others are used by the game engine to process certain commands.

Hmm.... 256 player map? :D Even if it does jack up the game. 8 humans vs 248 computers. Including neutrals and other messed up stuff that would make a map U(dang impossible to remember alt code)ber cool.I remember hereing about a map that was "hand made" with hex editor allowing it to have "nine players".
