Hi,

I was hoping someone could do a quick run-down on the compatibility/ethics of each map making utility, and map protecting and modding in general. I've been working on a couple map ideas with the normal editor that comes with starcraft, and it doesn't seem like it can create the effects I'm trying for. The utilities you have here sound great, but I'm worried about burning a bunch of time learning/using them to have my map be frowned on by blizzard or be unuseable by the masses.

looking for responses kind of like these, unless I'm completely off;

map editor utility "x" is:
-an editor blizzard designed, so yes, they're ok with it
-great editor made by some guy, has blizzards seal of approval
-works fine with everything and no complaints from blizzard
-it will only run on battle.net if you can convince people to wait through a five minute download of your odd map pieces
-blizzard doesn't care but it won't work on battle.net
-blizzard doesn't like it, but they can't do anything about it
-despised by blizzard and it will get you in trouble for messing with starcraft if they learn about it

also, along the same lines, could you mention a little about modding and protecting in general, and could you recommend your favorite protector?

thanks very much

Blizzard doesn't care about most map making tools or modding tools. They don't support any of it, but they won't do anything about if if you use them. There's things like BW Chart and Penguin Plug which Blizzard yechnically can't approve of, but they don't care. Only if you use modding tools to exploit something in the game's code, like the Mutalisk morphing thing in 1.12b will they do anything about it.

So, only the Campaign Editor has Blizzard's seal of approval, but most other tools they won't care about. Unless you put a lot of sounds into maps, a map won't take an incredibly long time to download. As long as you don't go overboar with stuff like stacking, you shouldn't encounter problems playing with other people. The only issues you may encounter is obscure map sizes crash people who haven't played a normally sized game in that session. Extended units and players tend to crash Macintosh players.

thanks!

if I was going to try and protect my maps, which protector should I use of the three listed on the starcraft mapping and modding resource guide? (what's your favorite, and why?)

thanks again

uBeR@TiOn v2.0.0.9

Not my favorite, as I don't protect maps, but it seems to be powerful & easy to use & with useful features.

I think everyone should protect their maps. Im not worried about a noob looking at it and seeing how it works, im worried about a noob editing it.

I would prefer using StarForge, although protecting the map could be bugy using it, It is said it's protection is uncrackable.
