Hi all. I've tried Port fowarding before but it didn't work well, but i wanna do it so i can finally play SC properly.
I've got a BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router.
Does anyone know of a sure way i can Port fowarding? I'm pretty sure creating a static IP is needed too, but i tried to do that and failed.
If i do need a Static IP, please keep it seperate from any port fowarding info i might need.
Thanks...

You will need a static [local] IP address. That usually is something like 192.168.x.x
To set up a static IP for your computer,
go to "show all network connections" and right click your network adapter.
Click Properties. Scroll down in the white box in the middle of the properties screen and highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties button.
Select "Use the following IP address" and in the IP address field give yourself a unique IP address. This should be something like 192.168.x.x, my uniqe IP address is 192.168.1.7
Subnet mask *should be* 255.255.255.0
Default gateway should be your routers IP address - a Linksys router's default IP address is 192.168.1.1
Now in the next field select "Use the following DNS server address" and put your routers IP in the prefered field. Leave the other blank.
Click ok.
Voila! you *should* have a static IP address on your computer now. Set up the router to forward ports to YOUR unique IP address that you just set up

Thanks BMB, those were good instructions, but i think i might've done something wrong...I didn't know what the Router's IP was, so i just put it as the one i wanted which was 192.168.1.5. in. As for the default Gateway, i put the one in you just mentioned above, so will it work with The voyager at all?
Edit: Do you also have instructions for the Port fowarding part too? Where would i find the place to foward it to my (hopefully) static IP.

Do you know if i Did the static IP correctly Neo?
JUst make sure to double check the ip address for the gateway (it needs to be the ip address of your router I believe).

I know how to set up the Static IP (which is required before port Fowarding) but i have come across some problems.
-When i have set up the static IP, the internet connection no longer works, both USB and Ethernet don't work alone are in union.
-You cant have a static IP when using USB and Ethernet together, only one can be used. Which one would be better to use? (I vote Ethernet)
-Where do i find the Default IP adress? MB said that a "Linksys" router's Default IP is 192.168.1.1, but is that the same for the BT Voyager? If not, then where would i find the default IP?

1) Are you using windows XP?
2) Ethernet > USB because of faster data transfer
3) Look in the manual for the default router IP address. If you think you know what it is, enter it in the URL of your browser (like http://192.168.1.1 ) and try a few variations until it works (like http://192.168.1.100 )
edit: wait, how do you have USB and a router? I thought routers only supported ethernet......

1 - Yep, windows XP
2 - Like I thought:)
3 - The default IP doesn't appear to be in the manual, which isn't exactly helpful:( Maybe i should contact my ISP about it?
And about the router, It has 5 little lights. Power (straightfoward,) Diag, DSL, Ethernet, USB. There are slots for both the Ethernet cable and the USB cable in the back of the modem/Router. I can get an internet connection by using Ethernet or USB alone, or together. I suspect the purpose of it is to support an internet connection on two computers (one of the features of the modem) but that's not happeneing here so it shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds to me like that "device" is actually a modem and there is no router.
How many computers in your house have internet?

Just the one i'm using now:P
And it's got Router written on the modem, so i can't make out if it is a router or a modem. Damn i don't even know the difference between a router and a modem! ><

Alright well I looked up your model on google....
So it's a router/modem that came with your internet. Arrrg I hate those lol

Will do.
If i contacted my ISP, do you think they could guide my dad (but eventually i'll end up doing it, my dad sucks at tech) through Static IP/Port fowarding? They should be able to do that sorta thing right? (and it is a free number so abuse abuse abuse!:P)

Hehehe, if you do decide to call, be warned that it may take a long time and they may have an indian tech support accent and they might not have accurate information =P
1) Try going to http://192.168.1.1 and tell me what happens
2) theres something called Remote Assistance in windows XP that lets someone (you) let another person (me) see exactly what you see and work on your computer from a remote location. We could try that, send me a message on AIM or something and we'll see what we can do.

Heh heh, yeah. All too true! I can never understand a word they say. Why would "British Telecom" have workers with non British accents. Anyway, besides the point!
I'll try these things in the following order:
-Check that IP you just posted
-Get BT to do it (fingers crossed no non-understandable accents)
-Should the worst come to the worst, Remote Assistance is the way to go.
I wonder if Windows knew that creating Windows XP would produce a product called "Windows: Smiley Here"

Ok i think i got the static IP. But just how do you do this
"Set up the router to forward ports to YOUR unique IP address that you just set up"
Guidance people?

Did you get a static IP on your computer or for your internet connection
If you just set up a static IP for your computer, that is YOUR unique IP address you just set up.
what is the static IP address you just set up anyways?

192.168.1.5
Let me guess, there's something wrong with that...right?

192.168.1.5 is perfectly fine. Now you have to set up the router to send incomming traffic to your computer. Normally, the router just throws away some information caus it doesnt know what to do with it. You need to tell the router to give that extra information to the computer called 192.168.1.5 instead of just throwing it away -- this is called Port Forwarding.

open up internet explorer (or firefox) and go to http://192.168.1.1 and tell me what happens.

Look for an option on the page that says Port Forwarding, it may be under Advanced if thats there.

Try googling the model name of your router -- maybe the manufacturers website has some instructions.
