You could try looking at the map reviews on StarCraft.org. Or try the random map button. Most UMS games on Battle.net are fun. Toads turret defence is really hard though...

You might want to try playing melee games with him versus you, and then letting him win, but not too easily. Just kill a couple of Marines, and then mabye kill his first force, and then let him kill you.

Hey, it works.

no you shouldnt let him win you need to let him get so close to winning he can almost taste it but then deney it from him. thats the best way to do it makes him push harder to win and it will do nothing for him if he just keeps beating you.

A good map I played as a newbie was Blood Bath. It's a four player map that was in original SC. T'was great times playing that. I learned so much from that map. It's small, but has enough room for a decent base. Also, with only two people playing, you have two expansions on the map, and then 4 extra expansions off of them. There are two expansions of minerals only in your own base. The minimal gas on the map almost forces you to go ground, unless you let it get long and drawn out. T'was great memories indeed...

When I taught people to play, I started them off allied with me playing a comp stomp. This gave them an opportunity to watch me play and try to mimic my strategies, whilst I handled the computer.

Of course, there comes a time when you have to ween off of computers and enter the big bad world of playing against evil scheming humans ;)

oh yeah and I recommend you don't start them out on a fastest possible map. Then later when they play on real maps they will really suck and to them it will be like learning the game over again

true.

Play maps like dire straits and lost temple. Play 2vs with him and try to make him go into a position which will make him save you. (well, worked when my sis was learning terran). Do something amazing (normal for pros), like spawn broodling 12 tanks with 12 queens at once (cloning). First time I saw starcraft, I was an AOE fan so I was very suprised to see the zerg. Play activly to make him try to follow you. (and don't gloat about what you pull of. (will make him think he sucks and give up)

ok this idea isnt going to work, just teach them to the best of your abilities...which for them better be good and them let them get bsed... they might just give in the first time but they will play harder next time.. always ready for someone to turn. Down fall to this is they will never trust anyone, but they will be good.

Blood Bath is a pretty good 1v1 map. Dire Straits is a good Island map, also. The overplayed LT is a good choice.

The best part of playing a new player is establishing several bases and then letting them overrun your starting position. My neighbor still thinks that I cheated every time we played.

Anyway, LT and Dire Straits are great for 2 player games. Most of the Blizzard maps are good. And money maps are horrid.

Yeah, that's another thing; you may start off playing only one or two maps until they get a handle on how to play, but after they're comfortable I'd make them play on all sorts of different Blizzard maps so they get a good feel for different map types and grasp the importance of scouting :)

I allways found challenger a good 2 player map, you know where the opponent will be, limited resources, makes a good short challenge.

Boy I know how this feels. I plyed on fastest possible for three years and in the last year or so I have dedicated myself to playing LT until I can survive on it. I still suck but not as badly as I used to.

I mostly play UMS. My favorite is SUnken D advanced and just about any RPG map out there.

I swicthed from Non Fastest to fastest.

I know how to play on regular ones, I just like doing things fast.

But I agree, don't start him on fastests.
