Seems the Federal Courts have ruled its legal to share mp3's on P2P services in Canada. Talk about a major blow to the high and mighty recording industry.

He compared the action to a photocopy machine in a library. "I cannot see a real difference between a library that places a photocopy machine in a room full of copyrighted material and a computer user that places a personal copy on a shared directory linked to a P2P service," he said.

Wow. That's an interesting comparison...but it makes sense.

It would be nice, but I seriously doubt anything like it will come about in the US.

^_^. I can finally click that 'allow uploads' button, and not feel bad about it then?

Wonderful! Wait . .. I still don't want to waste the upload bandwidth >_<;;. Guargh!

It's good though. Hoorah for Canada.

And there was much rejoicing in the lands of Canada.

There's one less thing I have to worry a-boot.

Sweet Damn, my dad doesn't let me download music, but I just walked in and I'm like "ha, it's legal now, they won't sue us" and he read it. He says he's waiting to see the impact. Muwahahaha, no more google for me soon boys :).

Not really. Unless you're willing to photocopy an entire book (lets say, about 200 pages at least?), and also taking into consideration it'll cost you a set amount per page (generally 10c). So what we have is a laborious task of photocopying page after page after page, coupled with the added sting of being charged $20+, not to mention that it'll all be shitty black-and-white quality as opposed to the glossy coloured book that is neatly enclosed within a hard cover.

On the other hand, MP3's can be anywhere from radio quality to CD quality, only cost you an Internet connection (which we all have anyway, if you're reading this). That's it.

Somehow I think it's a lot easier to download a near-perfect MP3 than it is to photocopy an entire book. That comparison is flawed.

One dollar!? What kind of mad exchange rate are you experiencing!?

A CD with ~10 songs is a good 15-25 dollars Canadian. That's about 2-3 hours of minimum wage work for a single CD for me. If I want a single song, as opposed to a bunch of songs by an artist/group, I'll just go with the download, thanks ^_^.

Of course, if I like a group or artist, I'll buy their album. Don't think I'm a cheapo here :p, because I do still buy a lot of CDs. I mean, I probably get 6-8 new CDs, and a few used CDs every month. It's just so damned expensive, and now that it IS legal to share as well :shiftyr: :shiftyl: :shiftyr: , I rest my case.

Not really. You're confusing the legal ability to do something with the desire to do and economic impact of doing something. The legal argument is fine. It goes something like this: if unlimited reproduction and free distribution of copyrighted printed material is allowed, so long as the original author is credited and the copies are not resold, why should the same not apply to musical recordings, which are nothing more than copyrighted recorded material?

In other news, von Finckenstein is THE most amusing name for a justice in any country, ever. EVER.

Yet another reason why Canada is one of the best countries to live in
God I love it here.

Photocopying 1 page in a book is exactly like stealing 1 song from an ablum of songs.

you canadians spend hours downloading songs when all you have to do here is walk to the nearest market and buy a cd of about 50-70 songs for just 50 bucks.

Well, now that I'm bad on my shitty modem (and I mean the shittiest of modems too), the best way to get songs is to have a very quick LAN connection availble and have many, many willing friends who also have LAN connections. You get songs very quickly,

BTW-- Download the song Smothered by Spineshank-- awsome!!
