View Full Version : Important! Possible battle.net virus?

I was ready to un-install my game after receiving some frequent and rather annoying lag.
Not only online, but offline aswell!

I have 600kbs internet connection and I usually have a game against my friends who have high speed also. I shouldn't be getting lag from a 7 year old game that uses sprites, considering I don't get any lag from Dawn of War: Winter assault. (DoW has high system, video and graphics card requirements + its 3D)

I looked in my C:/Program Files/Starcraft folder and found a file named
"Uploading Virus to lagger.mlx"
It was located in C:/Program Files/Starcraft/maps/save- I think it might be causing the problem. I got rid of the file and re-installed my SC and now it works fine.

Can anyone shed some light on what the file was?

(That opening cinematic is still one of the best game intro's, ever!)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!

I love these jokes. *.mlx files are SC save files.

In online games, the host would save the game in order to determine who was lagging. You'd give the file name of these saves, and someone eventually made a joke out of it by doing so:

"Saving virus to C:\"

Where "virus to C:\" was the saved name.

I have no idea why you're having problems, but it isn't because of THAT...

Midnight is right. It could have just been something with your server registry mabye? Or something of that nature that you can't go in and manually adjust. At least under normal circumstances.

Thats not a very funny joke! :P

Thanks for the info MidnightGladius, now I know what it is and I don't have to check my registry for viruses or anything like that.
How Starcraft lagged when I wasn't even on battlenet is a mystery?

-It wasn't other programs running in the background
-My Starcraft and Brood War are legal purchased copies
-Lag caused slow units and skippy animations
-Re-install fixed it

There is no Battle.Net virus! (yet?)

When did you last defrag?

A defrag every now and then can do wonders for your OS ;)
And when was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer? I know it sounds like an odd questions but dirt/dust can cause heat buildup and system problems (sometimes mine randomly restarts out of thin air :( )

Probably a virus from another file attached itself to the SC folder,so when you reinstalled it,so goes the attached virus.

Maybe it was caused by the battle.nsp file. I'm not sure at all, but I thought I read about that some time ago. It appears this file is some sort of log, and its size increases the more you play. Maybe it got really huge and caused you lag. That's why the re-install solved your problem (the file got refreshed).

Thanks for the advice everyone! I have never cleaned the inside of my Tower and I haven;t defragged for a while.

-I'll do a search for the battlenet.nsp
-Full system virus scan
-I have not maintained my PC in a bit (too busy playing games like DoW:WA and downloading stuff) :concern:

Update
You might have one on your cpu though ;p
WHO TURNED OFF MY FIREWALL!
Darn, my firewall was disabled and it never gave any sign that it was disabled!
I am not sure how long it was disabled but sure enough I found some spyware and some adware. (although nothing ever showed up while surfing the net)

Probably a virus from another file attached itself to the SC folder,so when you reinstalled it,so goes the attached virus.
Who knows?

In short, thanks to all for telling me "what I should be doing" (frequently)
I neglected my PC's maintenance...
