Hmm. It really depends. As for user-friendlyness, I like 98 much better, since it is more like older versions of Windows only more stable and better organized (and a bit prettier to boot).

However, if you want to keep up with new software, you pretty much need XP since 98 is soon to go the way of 3.1 and 95 (meaning new software won't run on it). There are advantages to XP, such as simpler management of user accounts and backwards compatability with some programs for previous versions of windows. But overall, it isn't that great, although I'd say its worth the upgrade.

Xp because it's prettier and has sweet themes. But if stable is what you're looking for, get 98.

Win 98 stable???

Are you talking second or first edition?

In my experience, Win98 wasn't that stable...

I think XP is the best, it is definatly better than Win ME anyway.

Depends what kind of system you have. If you have an older system then 98 will probably do better for you, if you have some what new system XP all the way. Getting 98 with a today’s systems seems rather stupid.

Xp I find is much better/easier to install drivers, 98 can be a pain in the butt.

Try to get Linux, there is a seamless emulator version that you can install and run windows based programs on. For less than windows itself, 120$ versus 400$ No question here :)

XP, although I don't like the new GUI. I have kept the 98 style taskbar and folders, but am using the Silver XP style.

Although I'm on 98 right now (crappy old computer...need to buy new one...need money...) I prefer XP only because with the new technology and whatnot it's sorta better, but for now 98 is fine. To be honest, I don't really care, and besides with any new computer you get XP and, as said, it would be stupid to run 98 on say a P4 or whatever.

Linux is overrated. It's supposed to be more "secure" than Windows, yet it was ranked last in a recent security comparison:

http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/top_news_item.cfm?NewsID=7980

It's also claimed that Linux has become the most breached online server OS in the government and non-government spheres for the first time, while the number of successful hacker attacks against Windows-based servers have fallen for the last ten months.

To arrive at its conclusions, mi2g analysed 17.074 successful digital attacks against servers and networks. It states: "With Linux accounting for 13,654 breaches, Windows for 2,005 breaches followed by BSD and Mac OS X with 555 breaches worldwide in January 2004."

Of course, there were many many more viruses written for Windows, but that's because a majority of the world's population uses Windows. There's no glee in writing a virus for an operating system that no one uses. =p

By the way, the same article says that Mac OS is the best. Go figure. =p

But like getting one is going to happen.

That's why you get GUI-overlay programs like WindowBlinds.

In terms of security, I would definitely believe that Mac OS is the tip-top.

Whatever happened to "Lindows" anyway? I know they had to change the name, but I don't remember what to, or if it even is still around...

Dark_Warhawk

Lindows is still around and they have not changed there name yet. the problem is, its crap, they make windows look good ;) i downloaded it and i could not even boot up off a CD. sucks for everything.

Whatever Windows version you use, I think that it is the most person-friendly version out there. It's very streamlined and everything (thats right, I said it: everything) works on it.

I don't think you understood me. I I don't like how the taskbar is set up or the folder options, so I got rid of both. I also have My Computer on the desktop and a bunch of other icons. I do like the new skin, silver, and that is what I am using (started a couple months ago, was using windows classic). I don't like WindowsBlinds becuase it takes up resources, is annoying, and messed up the Luna skin.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. i know personally that i like XP's microsoft applications(Word, Excel, etc.) much better than 98's since they have many more features that make it more versatile. Also i agree with dunchy that it is much easier to install new drivers on XP i have had multiple problems installing drivers on my 98 it wont even install my new keyboard(although that may be the 8 year old computer thats running it, or it could be the damn viruses i got on it that i havent gotten rid of because of the lack of working cd drive) also the programs and the sound/video cards that are coming out now days are starting to go more toward XP and other newer editions of Windows. All in all i believe that XP is a much better program to have on your PC.

I think its stupid to base decisions of operating systems on outward appearance...
I think win98 sucks. I had it on my old computer. It froze from like the 2nd week. Also, it's overall very useless these days - good games/programs are for XP. Also, XP is MUCH more stable, MUCH more secure...

WinME and crap completely suck - these is no purpose for these midde versions. win98 > ME, 2000

---

Now, if you want to consider user interface stuff, go with XP too. You can use windowblinds and other such software to make it look good. I don't think you need to bother about the fricking start menu - you need to ask yourself 'does it really matter that there is another row on the start menu, which can be removed...?' (what were you thinking discussing that, weekendlazyness? ;))

1) ME is just a reiteration of 98. It is based on the 32-bit DOS kernel, too. My comparison would be:
16-bit DOS < 32-bit DOS < NT Kernel.
2) I was discussing the start menu because it is the new XP start menu. I was saying I didn't like it because I don't like it. And that is what this thread is about, which OS you prefer.

why?
WHY????

why must every thread in these forums turn finally to spam?
why is spam always the beginning and the end; the alpha and the omega?
is spam the reason for our very existance? is it the answer to all the pilgrimages and the praying and the sacrifices? is it the solution to a holy equation that has not been solved as yet?

no it isnt.
so DONT SPAM! (on my thread)

Seriously. people need to understand the rules...a joke here and there is good, but this spamming is really annoying. so stop.

On topic: mtank, if you really want a good user interface, as I said before, choose XP. Please see my screenshots for more details (I think its under 'desktops' or something). It really is easy on your eyes to have cool windowblinds skins. PM me if you get windowblinds :) I'll tell you sme nice skins.

Also, with XP, you can make use of icon packager. Great for different icons and stuff...I tried using it with win98 and it slowed down my comp and crashed it...

Finally, XP is a lot more stable. mine has never crashed....TOUCH WOOD ;)

Yeah, the NT environment of XP lets you do a lot with your GUI that you can't do with the Win32 environment of 98. The ability to alpha-blend objects (adjust transparency) is my favorite thing about it, being able to have different shadows, semi-transparent windows and cursors, smooth edges on everything... *sigh* By the way, also get CursorXP, all you XP users. I love having a cursor that goes with my desktop theme.

There are only three things the Win32 environment is really good for: laughing at, swearing at, and overwriting with the NT environment when you upgrade to XP.
