do you think it is good/bad to protect maps?

I dont protect my maps becuase if i cant fix a bug someone else can to make it more fun

if i only can edit the map (well other people need programs to hack into protected maps) there will only be 1 or 2 version of it.

if others see my map they can think of 100 ways to edit the map, they'll have a different hero/abilities version they can make their own super triggered power abilities in it that make it more fun.

now of corse i want the modifier of my map to put the original idea by me

would you want to protect your map...............why?

With the latest map im working on i would protect it but protecting it means "damaging" several or a MPQ files, and i dont think too highly of that cause u could screw ur game if u didnt know what you are doing.

I just dont like the idea of people editing one or two things and they get the credit its shit.
But i will never protect my maps but i dont want anyone being fags and editing minor stuff and get the credit.

Although this is SC-BW mapping related (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=11819) it explains folks' major viewpoints into map protection... perhaps shedding a new light into the subject. And I'm for it, actually. :)

Originality is my main motto for it, btw. ;)

I don't protect my maps so people can see how I did some stuff.
But I HATE paople who change few minor bugs and then take all the credit.
If you want to put your name on a map, make one yourself, don't steal someone else's idea!
This way you're being a jerk and your mum did a terrible job raising your lazy ass. Tell that to your mommas.

I second that.

I like this subject too, becouse in someway i would like people to think like XZminX letting people see how the mapmaker did certain things. But i also see the problem with people stealing the maps. I protect my maps, but if any was to contact me about how i did, or do things, i would gladly give them that piece of my map. So maybe put in your e-mail adresses, so that people can contact you!

How do you protect your WC3-TFT maps? I don't know any tool that is able to do that at this moment.

And merely as a clarification to this subject, I'll gladly show how things were done in my maps if asked politely (mostly in SC-BW, I provide triggers or intel on'em and even terrain snapshots if asked also). ;)
I just hate the ripping off part, since many new mappers out there just steal your map and cheese it up 'till kingdom come thus terribly shunning the originality of the map. :mad2:

many ways, easiest is to import a blank txt file and rename it "war3map.wtg" (with no "s). It can still be read by the world editor (any form of protection can), but it takes some work.

this returns the "trigger data missing or invalid" error.

Dayoh

So if u did that how would u open the map with WE?

ya, the text file writes over the warcraft 3 trigger data (.wtg) so that the triggers cannot be read, hence the "trigger data missing or invalid" message.

ps: this topic should not be used to express personal oppinions, or else it will turn into a forum like the battle.net one, where all people did for a while was argue about protection.

If you do this, remember to backup your map as 1: mapname - protected, and 2: mapname (whatever you want) for instance - notprotected...

you will need to keep the two maps... maybe make a new folder to keep track of them like : protected, and unprotected versions

yer, i might do that with my new map

That's why I'm having the feeling that a FAQ for this section is also somewhat in due order... like the one in the SC mapping area (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=7391). Imho, it could ease some members' search for answers. ;)

We can only hope they will search on the subject before posting a new post!

Don't we all. Yes it is a problem map makers protect their work, but then again, i say protect, becouse that IS! what they are doing, too many people like to alter a unit name and one ability and write it off as their own creations, also even though blizzard owns all maps related to the world editor, makers tend to think that it is their map, and therefore owning the copyright to the material, so as long as people do anything to their map and publish it, they should get the permission from the creator. Really, its quite anoying for people not interested in stealing or publishing anything, those people like fellow creators looking for solutions or players wanting to change a overpowered skill, aso. But as long as other people steal work, this will be done by most map makers (atleast those i know off), many of them whom i have worked with are now so anoyed about it, that they tend to be carefull given out unlocked maps, even to debuggers, and testers.

Hope you understand, Zipsco

I don't think he will, Zipsco. He spammed all over the place where are WC3 map protection topics saying that he's against that. Therefore I assume that he's one of those :lame: rippers, although hoping to be wrong in this quick assessment of mine. :P

Just sharing my experience and opinions on the subject.

I know that and so do you, I hope (when I was refering to his attitude towards it).

For a similar issue, but under the SC-BW (mapping) community (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=11819), just peep. ;)

And now that I've looked into it better, there are two recent members that made similar remarks about it around here (Holy_Death' and GXForce'). It only gets better and better... (supposing they're one and the same.) (http://www.warboards.org/faq.php?faq=faq_rules#faq_faq_rules_duplicateaccou nts)

There is one thing u can dl to protect ur maps. It is warcraft3 map optimizer. Can protect your map and do things such as reducing map size without protecting map. Can be found at http://www.wc3sear.ch/index.php?p=Tools&ID=33&sid= (http://www.wc3sear.ch/index.php?p=Tools&ID=33&sid)=

If this link doesnt work, it's at wc3sear.ch in the tools section

Map protection is good, simply because there are so many idiots out there who will make a simple change to a complex map, and then claim that they made it in the first place. I would advise you to protect your map, but always keep an unprotected copy of the map for yourself.

ok here it is
for development maps: unprotected
for your one of a kind map made by you: protected
