[I hope there wasn't a simular thread]
We all know that StarCraft is one of the best games ever made. But why do you think StarCraft is so popular? There are many other games today that are 3-D and have as much more stragity and game play compared to StarCraft. But they wern't as populare as the 1998 2-D game. Why do you think what makes StarCraft so popular?

I can tell you right now.
Diversity and its not repetitive

every game you play online will be different, everytime. Also, the map editor allows us to build.. well.. anything our minds can grasp basically. There will always be something new to play, starcraft will always be a legend and will always be played.

Balance and free on-line play. While there are many mappers and modders, the majority of StarCraft players seem to play melee more than anything UMS or mods (from my experience and observations). The balance of StarCraft keeps people playing it as no game is precisely the same.

Oh, also, its balanced ^.^; Thats another major reason, so its not completely onesided every game.

Balanced and addictive.I can't give much reason for it,but when you play SC,you should also realise it.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's really any one reason for it. If I try to pick out a single reason, I can always think of games that are better in those individual respects. However, when I think of Starcraft, I think of it as a kickass game with no rival (though many have tried)...

...so, yeah, my reasoning.

I think StarCraft is so populare is becouse of the free online play. There are a lot of Teen games (13+) but what kind of 13 year old can afford 10 dollars a month, like most games that are out?

And what is other?

I voted for free play on b-net, i think thats the main reason i like the game :D

Well, for now I have to say free online play, because I haven't gotten bw yet and most 1 player games r bw plus all the extra editors/advanced maps require bw. When I get it my answer will be different. But its all of the above, but mostly b.net

Although the diversity and balance of the three races is a good factor to starcraft. I think its the campaign editor and battle.net that really extended the life of starcraft.

I've stopped playing starcraft for about three years now. But i've continued constantly making mods and maps for my own enjoyment.

And the ums on battle.net is like adding 10 more unique games into starcraft. You have massing games, d's, Tag, etc.

its all that diversity that really extends the life like that

I believe it is a combination of the editor's capabilities as well as built-in free battle.net to distribute creations. Certainly the editor contributed much, but it in tandem with battle.net made the game convenient.

By the way, I picked other because of my multi-faceted choice.

Personally if u ask me a lot of things went into the Starcraft being so great...not just one or the other...Because somebody could argry back that Command N Conquer Tiberium Sun had great cinatmatics and gameplay...which..it did..but not on the level of Starcraft...why..unlike CNC Starcraft was able to obtain a simple but yet at the same time a complex gameplay that CNC cound't match in as mant seriers as they have out.

Personally the Storline was Straight on all the teams in Starcraft where in CNC they had DIFFERENT ENDINGS and then somehow have Sequals....personallt I like how Starcraft all 3 races ended on the same note...Duran was making Hybrids...Kerrigain became the ultimate power for the time being in the Kuplril sector and Raynor lost everything....There was no....Ok in the Zerg Fenix and Duke dies but in Terran Duke survives because of Bla bla bla...it all happened the same...the other thing is the unit balancing....no one race is stronger then the other...in the aspects that the person understands all 3 races...even though I like the Terrans better doesnt mean the Zerg or Protoss suck...personally I dont like playing as the Zerg....I dont have a coneection playing as them...but neway...

The Graphics we easy on the eyes..I remeber the first time Playing I understood what unit was what...well the human ones neway..lol in CNC sometimes you really have to look to tell infantry apart

The thing I noticed too was they tried sometihng new....the 1 VS 1 VS 1 battle...Personally it took RTS to a new level making 3 different and yet playable races and it was a awesome idea. Hell by using some map editors you can even make RPG type games using starcraft. the engine it uses seems to know no bounds.

So Personally i hope Blizzard continues with the idea and spirt starcraft has now and doesnt change the "formula" for making great games.

Everyone has the same general idea as to why its the best game, its because its ever-changing! I.e The map editor, and how it provides like 10 types of games. Everyone has their own frayed opinion but we're all agreeing in reality

Starcraft is a great game because of balanced weapons and units, non-repetitive gameplay, and, most important, FREE ONLINE GAMEPLAY!

yeah i put the three races strat thing because none of them really fit... I like all of them and there wasnt an all of the above. The music def. pwns though

StarCraft would not be played today if it didn't have such an elaborate online system. Admit it.

Coincedentally I posted this a week ago at BF, so why not copy/paste it?

- There are three unique, different races (building style/supplies/units), but they are completely balanced with each other.
- Excellent interface. Every button is pretty much selfexplanatory and feels natural. See also the next point.
- Speed. StarCraft allows 300 actions per minute and even higher; the game is running at great speeds.
- Great replayability. Every game you play is different. (See Pimpest Plays)
- The game is still evolving. New strategies are invented every day.
- Luck is not a factor. Armor and damage statistics are static.
- Easy to learn, hard to master.
- Different races / matchups require different amounts of micro and macro management.
- Clear graphics. Although it's running at 640*480 and using sprites, it's not hard to keep track of the events and distinct different units. This unlike many 3D games on the market nowadays.
- Same goes for the sound. Every building and unit have their own sound. Units even make funny comments when you click a lot on them.
- The way you can place your buildings is unique. This is mostly due to the way maps are set-up, with ramps, cliffs, chokepoints, mineral lines, etc.
- StarEdit.
- Battle.net.
- Last but not least, the epic storyline.

I voted for the kick ass story line and cinimatics. Way ahead of their time if you ask me. That's all, I'm done, peace out all.

I voted for "easy to play"

Starcraft is easy to play, but hard to master!

I have stopped playing SC many times, for many other games.
Inlcuding other RTS's that IMO are better than SC. (no debate necessary)

But everytime I come back to ye olde SC.
I have never finished the campaign without cheating, I always CHEAT!
Its a bad habit with SC and results in "Red_Sarge" (US east) having a very crappy battle.net record.

I don't have patience for SC's style of gameplay- my excuse?
THIS GAME IS OLD! I don't bother playing a single mission for an hour in order to rise victorious.
But then I find I play without cheats, sitting for hours on a single mission.
Then winning and watching the story unfold! :o

Hello, my name is RedSarge and im a SC addict....

Cool Warhammer 40k icon. I like the Space Marine Thunder Halk, and is that a Eldar Scorpion? Off topic.

Graphics and story line are probably the most well know parts of SC.

Meep... Well the reason i think starcraft is still popular is because it is a bit like chess and survived a bit like chess. There are almost endless possiblities to win, lose and have fun in starcraft. You will always find different ways of playing like chess. In chess you can find loads of ways to hoodwink, trap and ambush your opponent and its fun to watch your opponents face as he watchs himself get screwed up, and in starcraft battle.nets case, its fun to watch your opponent struggle to win, making him think he has a chance, and than CRUSH HIM LIKE A BUG!!!(maybe not that but you get the idea) And you get that awesome feeling when you just use a cool/unknown strategy or use a strategy that you wont normally use and still win. It just has about everything a awesome strategy game is supposed to have.(Not all of them are above perfect though. Just on the line of perfect)

i think it's because you can have three diferent races. There is no enemy, hat you cannot become, making the 'good' people bad. Each race is unique and requires its own unique stratedgy.

InfestedArchon
10-03-2005, 3:21 PM
yeah i find it hard to play without cheating. This is my first time attempting to go through the entire game without it. As of right now, i am in the protoss campaign on the original campaign. The one where you have to capture Tassadar. You appreciate the story line so much more if you dont cheat, trust me. BTW this mission is incredibly hard.

Yeah, all of the above. It's really a great game. If you made a game that just focused on one of those things, it wouldn't be as good as SC. It's all those little things that make it exceptional online and even the campaign game.

Well, I voted other, and by that I mean pretty much all of the above.

Although I don't think that graphics and sound quality make or break a game. It's the gameplay that really shows how good a game is, when you come down to it.

I think that the Sheer Amount of replayability rovided by Mods and Map editors is what keeps it going. Evrey time I log on t oB.net I see a new map and look at how big the Customs database at Starcaft.org has gotten. All in all I think that if blizzard keeps up its support and keeps publishing add on editors and maps starcraft will be around for awhile.

P.S.: Maybe we could sumbit it to G4 X-plays Games of cheap B@astards thing and we get fresh meat on battle net! Yea noobs to kill!

I think pretty much it is all of the above, the fee online play is a great option. Also since lots of people are saying against C&C i say that it has no "bad guys and good guys". you play as each team in campaign and to each of them the ones that there against are there enemies. in C&C you have nod who are bad and that kill the civilians and all that stuff and the GDI i think it is who are the good guys.
