*rolls eyes*
If me and GrassDragon aren't around for a while (I assume he's actually evacuated already) it's because of this wonderful new hurricane.

In case none of you know, I live not far from where the darkest red bit of that is headed. I hope I don't have to leave!!
Edit: GD hasn't left yet..we've still got a couple days. We'll see what happens!

I pray for your safety. With all the talk about Hurricane Katrina, some people forget about the smaller hurricanes that still cause damage.

Smaller..*hah* Rita may end up being a category 5 by..Friday I think it was? It's not smaller...It's just that Houston isn't way below sea level.
Oh and thanks for your prayers. We'll need them.

They're predicting a Friday at midnight hit, several days away. Schools are closed down everywhere, expected mandatory evacuation, all that. We're securing the boat, helping our neighbors, then leaving probably tomorrow night or Thursday morning. A lot of people are moving as far north as San Antonio, but we'd only go as far as Conroe (north Houston).
Thanks for the good thoughts guys!

Unless it's worth a ton of insurance money that you could buy a better boat with of course... (my current house has a smiliar scenario...)

Yo, praying for your safety. Don't get caught in the storm, that would really ruin your day. But seriously folks, I hope you two are safe, along with everyone else in the storms path. I take it the grean areas are just rain stroms and really high winds? Cause the light green area extends to Kansas, most my mom's family lives in Kansas. I pray for all of you guys caught in the storms path. Stay safe my friends. Stay well. Most of all, stay alive and able to type.

I believe Katrina was only a category 1 hurricane when it passed over the southern tip of Florida and gathered force before turning and slamming N'awlins.

And on a side note, this has got to be some sort of record, the amount of Hurricanes the Southern (Eastern) U.S. is having is really insane. Poor Florida :(.

I was down near Conroe last weekend. Then went to College Station to watch my school get trounced by A&M. :(
Anyway, should you for any chance go further north, head up to Dallas or maybe take Hwy 59 to a little place called Marshall. They're real friendly there. Not that I'm biased.

how lucky is that? I've had two tornadoes in my lifetime though, so I'm not too badly positioned.
Good luck and safe trip trails to you two (TinyD' and GD)... am hoping that it isn't serious enough to hinder your regular day-today life after it passes. :)
Am also extending this vote to every fellow WB'der, respective relatives and acquaintances that may be any near "Rita"'s path.

Whenever they start naming Hurricanes by using the greek alphabet sometime in the future, then you can expect to see hurricanes named Alpha, Beta and what have you. Though from my point of view, when they actually change it to the greek alphabet, then I'll lay odds that the Hurricanes aren't going to seem as frightful until it get's to Omega. Seriously, who is going to be afraid of a category 5 hurricane named Alpha or Kappa? It just doesn't have the same zing to is like Hurricane Omega would.

Thanks for the warning Al Gore. Hey wait a minute...didn't Galveston get destroyed by a hurricane in 1900 killing like 6000 people? Global warming before vehicles and industrialization? Say it ain't so!
On a much more sincere note, TD and GD, please be safe.

Only as far as Conroe? I'm not familiar with hurricanes but apparently being next to the water has a large effect on how much damage you experience. At least that would be my conclusion based on the fact that you would only evacuate to Conroe. Is that the case or am I full of it?

Actually as far as I know we're staying here...we're in one of the highest places in Houston. Oh and they don't just name them after females, they alternate, and they go in alphabetical order. There have been several small hurricanes between Katrina and Rita.
Apparently hurrican Rita has now been upgraded to a category 5 hurricane. It is now the 5th most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin.
source: http://www.weather.com/
I just hope it hits Houston and not New Orleans again. I don't think they could deal with another Hurricane in New Orleans again. If it DOES hit New Orleans, I think I'm going to go out and find a good conspiracy theory that I'm comfortable with and subscribe to it.

I don't know about that Sikawtic... I am kind of partial to the "God is Punishing America For Her Sins" theory; but I also like the "Pink Flying Elephants Control Hurricanes" theory as well.
If it DOES hit New Orleans, I think I'm going to go out and find a good conspiracy theory that I'm comfortable with and subscribe to it.
It's quite obvious. George Bush has acquired the weather modification machine that was created by the Soviets in 1976. He is using the machine to kill all the black people....including Kanye West.

Erm...I watched a report on CNN this morning.
Rita could possibly be worst than Katrina?
When they downgraded it from a Category 5 storm to a Category 4 storm, that doesn't really tell you the whole picture. The only thing "category" refers to is wind speed at the eye of the hurricane. It doesn't tell you the most important parts though: wind speed over the majority of the storm, size of the storm, and how long it is expected to last.
This hurricane is the 3rd most intense in recorded history. It is also LARGER than Katrina by a fair amount, and category 4 wind-speeds are nothing to sneeze at. The reason this will be worse than Katrina in some ways is due to the fact that the winds aren't the worst part, the storm-surge and flooding are.
They are predicting 20' to 30' high waves. Most of the levees in Texas can only hold back 14' high storm-surge. Water will be everywhere.
Get out while you can.

It seems to have turned further east..still gonna hit hard though.
I hope people didn't start going back to New Orleans, because ummm... Rita burst through some of the levees already, and parts of New Orleans that they had just managed to clear are flooded again...
Weeks of work, down the drain.
New Orleans can only handle about 8" of rain right now according to CNN. Also, last time Katrina hit about the same distance from New Orleans as this is supposed to, but on the weak side. This time New Orleans is gonna get hit even harder than last time! Sad.
