BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (CNN) -- Trapped inside the darkened, stifling hot attic of her flooded home in New Orleans with her two teenage daughters, Debbie Este watched her own mother die as they waited for help she thought would never come

nowmy disussion i guess bases on this. This idiot called a mom put her family in more danger by going into the attic, then by O.... trying to freaking swim. Is she that dumb and stricken with fear that instead of trying to swim, or go on the roof she would stay inside and die? morons. I think she is a moron.

thoughts?

Well I can understand going to higher ground. But in a desperate situation like that can't they bust thrugh the roof and make a run for it?

Well was this during the storm or afterwards? If it was during the storm they had no hope of swimming anywhere...

Bear in mind that it's not as if they've got the community swimming pool downstairs; the floodwater is putrid. All sorts of debris and filth are in it - including human waste.

Not to mention that once they leave their homes, they may never come back. They also might get lost seeing as most people navigate based on familiar landmarks... most of which are probably gone.

Ok, I have a choice, drown, or swim for it. What would you choose?

A mom, two daughters, and a grandma. Most likely no tools. How do they get to the roof? During the rising flooding they couldn't use the windows less they risk being washed away. After the water quit rising, all the windows are most likely under murky, fetid water. And assuming everyone knows how to swim is very ignorant at best.

So, if the attic is so friggin dangerous, should they have stayed downstairs?

They didn't drown though, did they? Funny that; seems there's a lot less chance of drowning if you try to stay out of the water, hmm?

Oh, i read the first post wrong, i was under the impression that they drowned in the attic. If the water doesn't make it that high then the attic is the right place to be.

Here is the full link from which LordQuimbley got his quote from: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/09/katrina.survivors/index.html

If you read the whole thing, it never says they tried swimming, nor did they need to. Also their grandma died from previous medical problems which started affecting her again (Heart problems). She did not die of drowning. So not being able to swim had nothing to do with this article.

This has me wondering: Is there any chance that people can construct a basic boat from materials within their homes? Like the door for instance. Assuming the flood is calm enough, they can float on a piece of wood.
