View Full Version : Worst. Scam. Ever.

This thread is part fact, part question. Firstly, the question - what can Blizzard do to stop scammers?

I was talking to a couple of friends in 'tetub' recently, on Warcraft 3. A guy joined the channel, he was called ResetComing. He began by saying that all statistics would be reset as of midnight. Oh yeah, and he claimed he was from Blizzard. We'd already worked out he was a hoaxer by the crappy spelling, and the fact that Blizzard would never do this. He went on to say "If you want your level saved, give me your account name and password quickly," by which time we were laughing our heads off. It's difficult to think that anyone would fall for this, but some new people might've - so is there anything Blizzard can do, like have a lookout able to ban people in every channel - but then there are too many channels...

The same goes for flamers, spammers and advertising bots.

Any ideas?

Well if there is a "Report abuse" option, I can't remember right now if there is or not, you could use that.

I don't think anyone who could put a CD into a CD drive would fall for that though.

Blizzard has terms and conditions of usage. I imagine they have something there that new people should read for their own protection. If Blizzard is going to make any kind of announcement, it will be on the Bnet website. It wouldn't hurt for Blizzard to leave some kind of advisory to that effect in the main chat room you go to when you log in. I imagine if it becomes a serious problem, they'd do something about it..

They can't really stop it, beause well its not their fault stupid asses will fall for a scam. Scamming is actually quite fun.

They do have ways of stopping scams. You report who scammed you, your CD-Key, accounts, and date of purchase, etc. They find the guy, delete his CD-key, your CD-Key, and issue you a new one. Problem solved. Anybody who scams 50+ accounts I'm sure would get traced by Blizzard and made miserable. If they're international, they'd probably just ban their IP if they logged in from a private network.

Most scammers are pretty swift, they just take your info steal all your stuff and leave it be, like nothing ever happened. I've always wondered if there's a big log of everything that's happened... like... "so and so traded this and this and this to this guy for this", because that'd make catching scammers uber easy... see a guy taking stuff after stuff after stuff from multiple accounts, *banned*

If someone falls for a scam like that, they deserve to lose their account. Until IQ tests become mandatory before using the internet, scammers will forever play a valuable role in the online community.

People often fail to appreciate the importance of the more nefarious elements on the internet.

I'm sure there is a question of legality regarding the impersonation of a Blizzard employee.

People who make scam like that should be banned immediately, and their CD keys removed pernamentally. Add to that hackers, even in custom games, and smurfs.

Smurfs? So what you're saying is, anyone who starts a new account besides their first one, no matter who they are, should get banned. That's a bit harsh. People who smurf until they lose once (and their stats are ruiend, oh no!) are really annoying. People who smurf to try out a new strategy or to make sure that their Internet connection is working are fine. It's part of the game.

Sorry. What???

All these people saying that people dumb enough to fall for a scam deserve it are really, quite... well, nasty. Ever seen Hustle on British TV? It's great, it's about a group of master scammers who go around scamming people with unbelievably clever tricks. Sometimes, you have to watch it twice just to work out how they did it. If it's a really clever scam, and it's a perfectly ordinary person they're scamming, they don't necessairly deserve to lose all their hard work. Look at RuneScape, first time players don't know common scams and get scammed all the time. Do they deserve it?

Your argument (which is also non-existent) is completely flawed.

I was referring to people who smurf to try to get a 95% or whatever win ratio, by getting easy wins off the low levels. Yes, what you said, "people who smurf until they lose once."

Not our fault azeroth has alot of sucky players. Besides by the time you get 10-0 on your smurf you play level 40s and even sometimes level 50s. Its nearly impossible to go 25-0 solo unless your 4k grubby or something. But banning smurfs? Thats the most retarted idea ever. Half the smurfs arent even good. And when i play smurfs i usally win easily. Dont complain that you cant beat smurfs just improve your game.

This mind-dump has no cohesion or structure whatsoever. I'm inclined to argue with the sentiment of it, but I'd mostly be guessing because it sure as heck doesn't explain itself.

I'd like to point out that smurfing was given the name because it was likened to playing with children. It's generally done when someone who isn't gaining levels anymore goes and beats up on noobs for an ego boost.

Let me see you go 30-8 solo. Oh thats right, you cant. You can just mass games. Let me see you even go 10-0 or 11-0 on solo. If you got that far, id rofl.

Actually, when Azeroth went down the other day I started playing on US West on my acct that had been wiped there. I was what, 5-0? I didn't lose a game, and I wasn't really challenged, either. But then again, I'm not the one claiming it takes any skill.

Theres a big difference between 30-8 and 5-0 and 5-0 and 10, retard. Read my post before replying next time thx. And alot better players play on azeroth then west imo. A few months ago i made a smurf on there and went 28-3 on solo so easily.

But... how can you tell who's smurfing and who's genuinely making a new account?

Exactly. Well a smurf is like somone that goes 10-0 on solo, loses his eleventh game then quits using that acc. I wouldnt really classify my acc as a smurf though..

Smurfs lose you more experience than established ELL players if you lose, when they're at low levels. It's why I prefer to play high level players.

You shouldnt worry about level to much being as your a hasu. Just worry about trying to get better and improving your game.

I've versed some ppl who are level 5 and under, but who are really strong.
But for the most part, the anti-smurfing post was probably going too far.

If you wanted to "report abuse", it sure as hell wouldn't have started (nor peaked/piqued) just then.

mirthrandir63, cut back on the flaming. It is completely unnecessary and will not be tolerated.

*ahem* http://img.orgnetwork.com/wb/buttons/report.gif, cleverly hidden on every post made on WarBoards.

Also, the IPs of mirthrandir63 and GenocideAlive do not match up, so unless you know something I don't, try to keep baseless accusations to a minimum, ok?
