View Full Version : What Do You Recommend For A Noob?

Which race/hero would you recommend for someone who just started Warcraft III, and has beat the Human and Undead Campaign? I tend to like the undeads, but I really hate the hereos they have, they just don't work for me. But I am a noob, and got the game yesterday, and would like to know what you would recommend for a "Noob Race".

Geez, the number of people who call themselves 'noobs'. You are not a Noob. You are a 'Newbie' or 'New to the Game'. Now that we got that over with, (I just hate the term 'Noob'. I find it offensive, for some reason. People who call themselves it are worse.)

There is no 'Noob Race', I'd say. People start off with many races, but the only one I would tell you to stray away from is the Night-Elves. They require more tactical thought and knowledge of micro-management early on (if you're going straight to Huntresses then you need to know about hero-rushing or defending your base against a hero and a few units with just a hero... but I digress) so are generally for people with a month or more's experience. Once you play them in the campaign, you'll get to grips with them and then perhaps you can do well with them. It took me many months to appreciate the Night-Elves were good. Then, I realised that they were imbalanced and started using them!

I always recommend Orc as a starting race, because of their brute strength, good HP and attack of their starting unit and wide variety of heroes. But, it's up to you, you can pick whichever race you feel most comfortable with.

Hope this helps.

I have always been better with humans, footmen are the way to go if playing vs Night Elves, especially with the latest patch (Defend reflects attacks now)

In ROC Riflemen And Preists were as good as it got, but seeing as how in TFT Piercing attacks no longer do extra damage against heavy armour, that arnt much cop vs late game heavy units.

I really like the human heroes. But thats just my choice, play a few games with each and see what you like.

Dont play UD, ud is a micro intesive race that requires alot of knowledge of knowing when to creep and knowing when to slow your opponents tech down. Your best bet would be NE. Once you learn micro, NE is incredibly easy to use compared to other races. They only have trouble vs hu sometimes.

Try this: Play the campaign. It will walk you through the game and at the same time, expose you to all the units and teach you a lot. Don't just pick arace and jump onto Battle.net. Play the campaign.

try humans, they are easy to learn and they are a good force.they have good heros and the name of the buildings are simple to remember!
but you don't have to ask people about what race you have to play with, i have to chose your race, the race you play better and you have strats!

I agree with Ender - the best way to become good at the the game is to play the campaigns, as they will eventually end up using all the heroes of all the races (this does require the TFT campaign as well) as well as most of their units.

What I did, even after that, was to simply play single player with a computer of the same civilisation but in an alliance, and just try out what I could do with that civ. And just play 6v4 with the computer or something, so you can fully explore the civ without being attacked - and can just attack them at will without needing to defend yourself.

Finally, it is a good idea to watch replays of advanced players, and learn from them. But don't just get one person or whatever - but remember that every game is different and that whatever they did will not get instant victory in every game. :)

Play elf, problem solved! ActuallyI found orc a lot easier. I suppose its because I dont like massing hunts like 70% of elves do. I go archers which gives me trouble vs Orc.
Order of easy to hard
Elf (very easy and lil micro needed if you mass hunts/staffs/abuse/beardryad)
Orc (easier if you dont make mass hunts, harder if you make mass hunt)
UD (hard and micro intense)
HU (about the same as UD, a bit easier if you stay in the autocast zone, otherwise a lil bit harder)

Well, I still haven't found my favorite race yet, but, in the end you have to choose one for yourself. One that fits your style. Then you can learn and improve on it.
I think that each race has their own strengths and it just depends on what you want.
Building: The humans can build an individual building the fastest, the undead can just summon a couple at once and then do other tasks, the night elf lose the wisp, and the orcs have normal building.
Gathering: The night elf don't need to travel at all, the undead travel only for lumber but need two different types of units for gathering, the humans and the orcs have to travel for both.
Defense: The night elf buildings attack units a little but the wisps don't help defense too much(but it depends on situation), orc buildings can return damage but only to melee attackers and their peons can get into burrows to attack, humans only have defensive towers and militia(if used properly it is enough), undead have ziggurats but their placement is important for them to be very defensive and their lumber gatherers are their basic attackers.
Attack Force: The orcs have the Grunt as the basic attacker which is, I think, the strongest of the basic attackers, the humans have the footman who is pretty well-rounded, the night elf have, I think, the weakest but they are very strong in numbers and are the only basic attackers that can attack air units(which is usually very helpful), the undead have the ghoul which is used to gather, so you have to be able to split them in two(some for gathering and some for attack/defense).
Then, another thing that you must look at is the heroes, but i don't know too much about all of them.
Perhaps someone who knows more should explain the heroes(preferably someone whos uses the hero a lot)

Also, I'm not too sure, but I heard that usually a newbie is someone who is new(no debate about that), but a n00b is someone who is someone who is somewhat new, but acts like he knows a lot, and usually annoys more experienced players.

Well "n00b" appears to mean "You're a bad player" - and (its almost funny:rolleyes: ) something some people call everyone they beat, and everyone who beats them. But for the most part, usually just "You're a bad player"

Too be honest, I am not sure that what you said are the best categories to use a race. To be honest, as much as almost everyone thinks that NE are overpowered, all races are about the same, so you just play all four for a while (complete both campaigns first), and then choose the one you like the best. What I said before, just play with one person versing no-one, then play with the computer in uneven teams in your favour, then slowly make it more and more even, while in the process learning how to use the race. Well that's my opinion.

I would like an explanation on how elf ISNT overpowered. And if all races are equal I spose UD and HU dont require as much effort as Orc and I spose Orc requires not as much effort as Elf.

Perhaps Yoda is thinking about Night-Elves on a unit-vs-unit basis. In other words, what I think he is doing is saying that every Night-Elf unit can be countered by something, and perhaps not thinking about the bigger picture i.e. unit combos.

When you think about it this way, Yoda is right. Dryads can be countered by Raiders and Demolishers for Orcs, Fiends for Undead, Riflemen for Humans and Archers for Night-Elves. Huntresses can be countered by Raiders and Demolishers for Orcs, Fiends for Undead, Riflemen for Humans and Dryads for Night-Elf, etc. etc. However, Huntresses paired up with Dryads, and adding in DotTs, are quite effective and have no specific counter other that Rifles/Casters or Raiders/Demolishers/Headhunters (that I can think of, anyway).

Let's look at it this way. Compared to a lot of other games, Warcraft is extremely balanced. The main reason I like Warcraft is that there is no one way which can guarantee absolute victory, people come up with different strategies, and you face a variety of different players each with their own ideas about their chosen race. Look at a game like Empire Earth, it's not balanced at all.

Let's all just accept Warcraft for what it is, eh? :)

Yea its so incredibly balanced that the orc has to completely outplay and outmicro by a huge margin his ne opponents mass summons/cyclone just to have a chance vs that fag strat while the ne doesnt have to hardly micro at all. I like how level 3 bears decimate tauren. And its even funnier what they do to grunts. Well nobody gets taur vs ne unless they want to lose. But its so fair how a ne player can cyclone all my dispel so i have no counter to the 999 lava spaws, quills, etc. Or a dh that can make my hero have to buy a clarity pot every 3 seconds. And gotta love their instant heal wells while i have to wait 3 hours for salves to heal me.

The flaw of his is that it's theory crafting. Notice how dryads require melee users to switch to range and bears force range users to switch to melee...? I wonder why they mix those two units together... And they're are counters. But they're significantly harder to use and getting them is sometimes harder...

Ok, I should say that I think the NE imbalance is from being too easy to use and can make too powerful combos, aka dyrad and bear. Unit to unit basis is ok. Maybe the Staff of Preservation needs a longer cooldown. However my comment that NE is not overpowered is probably because I play them, and have never managed to easily win with them. But I am not an expert.

Play any race besides Elf. Orc you might get thru w/ except if they do something cheesy. See how hard it is to beat the elf.

Orc isnt a easy to use race like others. Really orc has the most weakness atm. They have trouble vs mass casters, mass roys, t3 air, dryad bear, cyclone, poly, somewhat slow, mass summons, etc. Sure orc can be a really good race, but orc virtually is the weakest tier 3 race. Their tier 3 isnt even worth getting in solo. I mean seriously you wont ever see a good orc player tech to tier 3 in solo until waaaayy late in the game. The problem with orc is, if you dont beat a ud or ne player before he gets tier 3, then you usually lose. Same can go for HU depending on his t3 unit choices.
