Windows 98 isn't listed under the software requirements, but most software is backwards compatable. You would have to ask Discreet (http://www.discreet.com/) about that.

I've wanted that program to make skins for unrealed

You don't need a modeling program to make skins, only models. All you need to do is take an existing skin (a 2D image), change the file format, then modify it in an image editor. However, if you meant modeling, I believe that all Unreal/UT games are supported by Gmax, Discreet's learning version of 3DSmax, and/or Maya Personal Learning Edition.

I have 3ds max 6. And let me tell you, its not as easy as you think it might be. Seriously...it'll take me months to even understand what's going on.

If this is the 3dmax we're talking about, this is quite possibly (IMHO) the best tut for 3d modelling I've ever seen! And the end product is just so . . .amazing :D.

Looks cool, I'd to it, if I had 3Dmax...

Btw, does 4DSM or whatever run on windows 98? Because if not...I need a new computer (I want 3D prog. soon...)

Gmax is a decent program, but it doesn't come with a built-in renderer, as does Max. Gmax isn't a very large download, however, and if you're serious about getting into 3DS, then picking up Gmax first is a must.

is 3dsmax 5 easier to understand? what does 6 have that 5 doesnt? are there a few missing features or is there a whole new concept to 3dsm6?

I tried to get the trail of 6 but it wouldn't work on my comp, brought me anger, and it's annoying to redoundload, then wait for my mom, then reinstall then, it was ugly, stupid admon privaleges pissing me off.

Try browsing around the Discreet (http://www.discreet.com) homepage for complete details. I'm not too sure about the changes myself, but since the upgrade is something like $400, and the product itself is $3,5200, I'd think that it'd have enough features to keep you busy for quite some time.

I had both demos of five and six, and I've done all my work almost exclusively in five. Not sure why, though. I'm just more comfortable with it.

I don't know why it won't run on Windows 98 - might have to check out the minimum system requirements.

[EDIT]Well, because I'm a real nice guy, I've picked out a few links for you. You can view a PDF of the new version six features here (http://www.discreet.com/docs/products/3dsmax/3ds_max_6_new_feature_guide.pdf) - I haven't taken a look at it, so I'm not too sure of what you're going to get there. It's a 10 meg file. Here (http://www.discreet.com/3dsmax/resources.html) you'll find a very nice list of community-based websites for all your 3DS Max needs. You can also find a link to the program's system requirements here (http://estore.discreet.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry17c?CID=82679&SID=37482&SP=10007&PN=5&PID=613375&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=82679) -- it doesn't support Windows 98, sorry man. You'll need to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
