Well this is how my last hour went:
I was moving this huge ass monitor over a total of 2 feet.
In the process both the DSL Modem and the WIreless Router fell to the carpet.
When I went down to pick them up I hit the back of my computer somehow, or I think I was moving where the mouse was plugged in becuase my mom doesnt like it when the mouse cord isnt on top (or some kind of stupid fucking shit like that -- at this point I dont efven care anymore)
Ok. So I hit something behind the computer and the thing just starts to restart. I start cursing and just shut it off, figuring I should just move everything now that its off.
Well ok so I move everything around, I pick the dsl modem (its fine, still working, its light, etc...), then I goto pickup the wireless router...
Ok, What the flying hell? The Antenna looked like it was RIPPED OUT OF THE ROUTER?!!?!? (WTFWTFWTFWTF?!)
Ok so now I have a non-wireless router (but it still works, thank goodness. Not that its useful now since the computer upstairs is connectionless).
MEeh.....
So I goto boot my computer up, and its listing the hard drive in some fucked up way with like ""''" "" " "''' " added to the end of it and listing as a 97 gig... its an 80gig. Its like 5 months old.
I just replaced the old hard drive and put it in THIS computer (I am posting via my slave computer I built a couple days ago) ... but the problem is that I deleted the info off this current drive here since I already had a copy of everything on the main computer.
Ok well, the main computer is fucked.
It goes to load Windows 2000 (like the hard drive is listed right, everything works...) but then it gets halfway there and goes toa blue screen telling me to check my hard drive for viruses and/or run chkdsk.
So I reboot it and tried to get into command prompt mode (Wtf happened to "Command Prompt" its like Safe Mode Command Prompt" or some shit!) and then it gets to a certain point and tells me... to run chkdsk.
So now I am either running the risk, or have already, of losing 10 years or so worth of data. I have a few backups scattered around, and am looking into restoring the things I deleted on THIS drive (I havent added that much) so I am hoping tobe able to recover most of the stuff...
But the main thing is -- I need to know if the other hard drive on the main computer is trashed or not. And its very important that I get it working in time for tonight (my mother is working overnights now on the computer for uhm... work).
I need some help picking a good Linux Live CD that can help me recovery things... Preferably it would be nice to have a Linux Live CD that can burn dvds for me, so I can burn anything from the trashed hard drive in an attempt to save it... Or something.
I just realized I'll need to move a CD-Burner to this computer... joy...
Does anyone have a good file recovery program anywhere? ... thats also kind of important.
I was looking at Gentoo but I have no clue what to choose, what I want, etc... all I know is that it has to be able to read NTFS >_>
