where, oh mighty kong?
I've seen this somewhere, just gimme a minute to look... unless you deleted the thread and posted this one, because I can't seem to find the other thread.
yes, because i deleted the other one, of course.
anyhow, here's the thread on IC:
http://www.infoceptor.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1339001
just their main index pages were affected. kinda sad, but whatever. most people don't really visit IC for news these days.

Lame :\
How hard is it to switch back from that? I'd think you could just reupload a backup. Even if the admin is gone, you'd think he could give his right hand man the FTP login to change it back?
Speaking of Detahwing, I can imagine that he wouldnt give it to anybody but him :P
Yeah, that's most of the problem right there.

We must have faith in AJ and his programming to protect Warboards.
"I find your lack of faith...disturbing."
a system locked down efficiently enough does not let anyone hack it down. administering it is trivial, though, but can be done securely.
our servers are quite secure, no worries guys.

What's Infoceptor? I didn't think to ask in the last thread.
Why did AJ delete the original thread?

Heresy! =P
It's a site loaded with info, customs, and programs for Blizzard games. I haven't been there in a while, so maybe someone that has used it more recently can give you a better description.
It's not heresy not to know about IC. Frankly it sucks horseshit. More so than BF. It also has a history of really messy administration.

Tell that to Yahoo and Google when they were hacked. If someone is experienced enough, they can get in.

then their systems were not locked down efficiently enough.
besides, YaGoohoogle! (you know what it means..) have so many boxes running that its quite hard to make any difference.

Come on BB, where else have you seen a site with that many SC customs? As far as administration and the forums, I never went to them.

You're better off not knowing, believe me.
Hey now, not all of the admins that worked there were crap. There were those of us that did work hard; Deathwing just took a big shit on all our efforts.
So we just took everyone to our own site. ^_^
It makes me warm n fuzzy inside to know Karma is biting Deathwing in the ass.
Edit: And damn you AJ, you stole my thread! My heart is sad...

So...how DOES one hack the site? Do they find the adminstrative password to something? Is this like a AoD? Did they manage to get into the site edit or source and change it?

Search Google. I don't think the mods would like me telling you, although I do know how, I just don't want to get in trouble...:)
mostly hacking sites is a result of people not upgrading what thier sites run off of (ie: a forum is updated, but the admin doesnt update -- script kiddy, or real hacker comes along and decides to exploit the currently unpatched hole).
Oh well This is what backups are for :E

Let's try not to alienate the members (and former members of Infoceptor) for that will not make us any better and I would certainly not want to start banning people for trying to start rivalries between them either for that would lead to a prompt banning that could range from a 2 week temporary ban to a permanant ban depending on the severity of the violation/s.
Now, I would like to let it be known that not everyone who is/was once a part of the infoceptorian community is to be given the same treatment as Deathwing for I have met a few people to whom I can relate to.

Meh, ya may consider me the 'usual' spined bush. :P
Most hacking occurs due to exploits found in web applications running on the server. The chances of actually finding remote exploits in Apache or the Linux kernel are slim to nill. A developer forgetting to screen input on just one field or the query string could result in someone hosing the entire site. phpBB and PHP-Nuke have been hit by a lot of these.

No problem, Spider. :) Tell Ms. Goldie (Goldfish60) that I said "Hi" whenever you get a chance if you would please.
On a side note, I kinda picked up a few pointers on moderating fairly large communities by observing your patterns when I was a newbie moderator back at Blizzforums. So far, your style has worked out quite well for me which enabled me to be promoted to senior Moderator within 6 months after being appointed as a Moderator prior to my departure from there. I guess that is why practically everyone holds me in high regards and for that I offer my thanks to you. ;)

Wow...I really don't know how to respond to that Demon Child.
You got me to smile. :)
I was looking back on my Infoceptor career, and I honestly thought I had done wrong. I never gave up the fight, and fought bloody wars no matter who I was up against. But it just prompted more hostility. Maybe the people I was modding had just as thick a skin as I did.
I've changed my moderating ways since then, I still carry the big stick, I'm just nicer and a lot more quiet. They straighten up when they realize they can't hear me coming. ^_~
Guess I did more good than I realize. Thanks, you made my day.
Just remember, it's not really me you should be thanking. The hard work you put into moderating showed itself in time.
P.S.
AJ, we still wub j00, unless of course you steal our threads. ;)
hahah, i'll remember that. ;)
now go fix those images! :p

I know the feeling perfectly. For I, myself, had gone through a change as well since my time at Blizzforums. Sure there are times in which the "iron fisted" side of me takes controll of the some rather disturbing situations like that in the Warcraft forums. But all in all the "Quick! Hide! DC is online and in the same forum as us!" (I know there are those of you to whom has done that so don't deny it :P) feeling from the forumers doesn't happen all that much anymore.
Just remember, it's not really me you should be thanking. The hard work you put into moderating showed itself in time.
Absolutely! There is nothing that satisfies me more than the feeling of a job well done. :D

This topic seems to be spammed out. By the staff. =p But I don't know what Infoceptor is even looking at all the comments. What I've learned today seems to be that Infoceptor and BlizzForums are completely evil. I'll go sign up on them, then. They must fit me. ;p Just kidding.
