I have everything assembled in my new comp, but it won't turn on! If i turn off the PSU and then turn it back on, it runs for 5 seconds then dies.

thoughts?

edit - it's not the powerstrip, since i have other things plugged in and they work.

using a rosewill 400 watt PSU (came with case)

chaintech mobo

a little while ago, it ran for 5 mins then died, and that's when this started

Is your power cord plugged in fully in the computer? 0_o

Hmmm. This is a new computer out of the box right? If you made it yourself make sure you have the mother board fully in.

If not is the fan working?

I don't see why it would not turn on... Anybody else have some thoughts?

i built it myself, but what do you mean 'having the motherboard all the way in"

ok i figured out that it's the mobo not the PSU with the trouble because i have a 20 to 24 pin converter and if I remove that and plug the 20 into the 24 i get the same 5 seconds of juice and then death

SUmmary of what I know so far:

Unplugging and replugging the power cord causes the case to light up and the fans to run for 5 seconds then die.

Disconnecting and reconecting the motherboard from the PSU has the SAME effect.

Thus, The PSU is onstantly providing the power, but for some reason, the motherboard stops receiving it after 5 seconds or so, for an unknown reason.

turns out i didn't put in standoffs, which was causing my mobo to short. Fixed now!

Check to make sure these components are working properly by swapping in one that you know works:
Power Supply
Memory
Hard Drive
Video Card

Also try reseting the BIOS.

I bet it is the power supply. Never trust the ones that come with the case you bought. They are usually very cheap and you should never go cheap on the PSU.

I suggest you go to Newegg and get a new one off there.

Edit - I realized I didn't suggest a brand for you. I'd go with one from Antec or Tagan.

Edit again - I didn't see your post saying you fixed it. Sorry for posting in your thread for no reason really. But you still might want to get another PSU; reason being is you could not be getting as much power as the PSU promises. I've see PSUs say they give out 400w, but only deliver 250w. Just something to think about.

BTW what are the specs of your new computer?

I reccomend PC Power and Cooling power supplies.

I was fiddling around with some stuff trying to plug in a new audio thingy and i might have touched a pin with my plyers or something, and now when I turn on my PSU, all my fans and LED's and other stuff attached to the mobo won't power on, but i can't use my power switch to turn on/off power, and I can't boot. Suggestions? the mobo didn't smoke or even smell and since it's conducting electricity i don't think it's fried...

Feel free to drop me an AIM or MSN at (aim) Weirdkartoon or (msn) prof.loganov@sbcglobal.net if you think you can explain better there.

If thats the case get a new motherboard, yeah, I know it costs, but though...

EDIT: Unless it's not broken, then just try making sure everything is plugged in and blow the ports to clear them of dust and stuff (Make sure you havn't just eaten :P)

Yeah, getting a new motherboard.
